(Russ) Windham have suffered the misfortune of the loss of their home with all its contents by fire whereby they have the sympathy of their friends. The citizens of Butler have become alarmed at the number of fires that have occurred here lately, whether they are from natural causes or otherwise, and sleep with fear lest at any hour they may be suddenly called out to battle against the flames that destroys their own or their neighbors property. The fire bug after doing its dreadful work a number of times in the business section of the town made a beginning Thursday night in the residence section, when about 1 o’clock the nice, new home of Mr. Russ Windham, on Oak Street was burned to the ground with practically all of its contents. Mr. Windham was perhaps the first to discover the fire, but not before the flames had covered the entire roof and burning over his head at a rapid rate to the extent that sparks and pitch were covering his bed when aroused from sleep by the cracking of timbers and heat from the flames. The savings of the family consisted of only one bed, a trunk or two and the clothing they wore the day before which was on a chair near the bed. The building was practically new, and by hard work and economy Mr. and Mrs. Windham had made a saving this year to make their last payment for the place, which they intended doing the next day. Mrs. Windham was known far and wide for her industry like that of her husband and besides outside work had stored in her home and her pantry hundreds of dollars worth of her own fancy needle work, canned fruits, jellies and preserves all of which were destroyed. The building, which was easily worth a thousand dollars or more was insured for $600.00, while the furniture was insured for only $200.00 with a loss in this respect of at least $500.00. This is the second serious loss by fire Mr. and Mrs. Windham have sustained since they have been housekeeping, but they have the energy and endurance not to be discouraged and will start anew to have a home. As soon as the insurance and other business matters can be adjusted Mr. Windham will begin rebuilding on the same lot.
