E. McCrary’s Home Destroyed by Fire Wednesday The residence known as the R. E. McCrary, colored, place, located in the northern division of Butler, was destroyed by fire about 11 o’clock Tuesday morning. The five-room building, erected by “Uncle Dick”, - as he is familiarly known, - several years ago, was made of as good material as ever assembled in one building. It was modernly constructed and considered one of the best pieces of property owned by the colored race in this section and erected in the days when “Uncle Dick” and “Aunt Easter” – his wife – were financially prosperous. It was where, too, “Uncle Dick” and “Aunt Easter” celebrated their Golden Wedding anniversary some years ago and was an event that partook of interest from white friends far and near who were present and took part in the celebration. “Aunt Easter” has since died, and “Uncle Dick”, feeble with age and health impaired, recently divided his property with his heirs, this property going to Mamie Evans, a daughter now living at Cordele, and was occupied by J. C. and Rosa Belle McCrary and with whom “Uncle Dick” made his home. “Uncle Dick” was taking his usual noon-day nap on the porch when the fire was discovered. Washing was going on in the yard by neighborhood women, and it is thought that probably sparks from under the boiling pot set fire to the roof of the building, which fanned by a stiff east wind spread rapidly and consumed the building before much of its contents could be saved.
