NEW TRIAL DENIED IN CASE OF FARMER UNDER SENTENCE OF 12 MONTHS FOR MAKING 
LIQUOR

Motion for a new trial in the case of E. B. Hammock, convicted at the October 
term Taylor Superior Court of the charge of manufacturing liquor and given 12 
months on the chaingang, was argued before Judge C. F. McLaughlin at Columbus 
Saturday morning and denied. The state was represented at the hearing by 
Solicitor General Walker R. Flournoy and the defendant by Homer Beeland, of 
Reynolds, and Jerre Moore, of Montezuma.
Following denial of the motion by Judge McLaughlin, the attorneys for the 
defendant indicated their intention of carrying the case to the state court of 
appeals on constitutional grounds. They maintained that the search of the 
premises of the defendant without a warrant was illegal. Liquor said to have 
been found not in his possession but in a house on his place and there were 
automobile tracks leading there from to a public road about two miles away to 
a still alleged to have been operated by him.
In the case of a suit against Pinkey Jordan, who inherited about $1000 war 
risk insurance with which she purchased a home Judge McLaughlin last October 
term directed a verdict for the defendant on the ground that the property was 
purchased with war risk insurance money exempt from levy and sale. A motion 
for a rehearing in the case was also denied.
A few other chamber matters in Taylor Superior Coury were scheduled for 
hearing but were continued due to the illness of Col. C. W. Foy, attorney for 
the other side.
