The facts which caused the death of Mr. Anthony are these: It was learned that John Henry Lee, an escapee negro convict was at Daugherty's saw mill five miles west of Hampton, and Mr. Anthony being deputized by officers Roper, Durden and McKinney to arrest Lee, went out early Saturday night to make the arrest. Arriving at the mill they found Lee who made an effort to escape the officers, and as he ran was pursued and caught by Mr. Anthony. While Lee was being held he drew his pistol and shot Mr. Anthony in the abdomen and made his escape. Mr. Anthony was shot about 11 o'clock Saturday night. He was given every attention until Sunday afternoon when he died. This removed from us one of the noblest young men that ever left Butler, and at the time of his death was in the employ of Mr. M.N. Blanton, of Hampton, and during his short stay in that city had won many friends, who sympathize with his bereaved family. He was a member of the Knights of Honor and was insured for $2,000. Published in the Butler Herald 7 Nov 1899 reprinted in the Taylor County Tracer Nov 1999 We were pained to learn by telegram on Monday morning of the fatal shooting of Mr. E.M. Anthony, (better known as Ed Anthony) at Hampton, Fla on Saturday night last. Mr. Anthony we learn died on Sunday but we have been unable so far to get full particulars. Mr. L.P. Anthony left Monday evening for the scene of the sad occurrence. His remains will probably be brought here today for burial. Mr. Anthony left this county about twelve months ago and was engaged as a clerk for a reliable mercantile firm at Hampton. He was about thirty years of age and leaves a devoted wife and several children, besides he was a most excellent gentleman, a son of Mr. James Anthony, of this county and leaves several brothers, sisters and many friends who are pained to learn of his misfortune.
