Mr. Pickens Byrd Died Saturday Last

Aged and Highly Esteemed Citizen of Panhandle District Peacefully Passes Away

By the death of Mr. Pickens Byrd of Panhandle district which occurred about noon
last Saturday one of the county’s oldest and most highly esteemed citizens is
removed from among us.

Mr. Byrd was a native of this county and resided practically all of his life
among our people ever winning and enjoying the highest of confidence.  He was a
confederate veteran and his comrades were ever wont to refer to him as a most
valiant defender of the cause.  He was a good citizen and kind neighbor and his
influence was ever felt for the betterment of his community.

Mr. Byrd was in the 72nd year of his age.  His death was due to general
disabilities.  He is survived by his wife, seven sons and two daughters; also
four brothers and one sister.  His children are: Messrs. J.T., R.E, Dock, G.M.
and Vashtine Byrd, of this county; C.H. Byrd, of N. Carolina, C.L. Byrd, of
Waresdale, Fla., Mrs. J.R. Montgomery, and Mrs. J.R. Jones, of Taylor County. 
The brothers and sister are: Messrs. J.E. Byrd, of Roberta; W.T. Byrd, of Fort
Valley; A.D. Byrd, of Panhandle; Amos Byrd, of Butler; Mrs. W.C. Chapman, of
Albany.

The remains of Mr. Byrd were interred at Glover’s cemetery, a large concourse of
friends gathering to pay him a last tribute of respect.  The funeral services
were conducted by Rev. L.A. Harrell, of Butler; and Rev. J.H. Allen of Reynolds.
