Taylor COUNTY GA Brown, Red Leonard File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by Angela Covington http://files.usgwarchives.net/ga/taylor/obits/brown.txt Howard Man Takes Own Life Here (Hand written note “Sun paper Dec 14,1958” “Sat Dec 13,1958”) A 73-year-old Howard, Ga., man took his own life in his car at a downtown parking lot here yesterday afternoon while his wife was Christmas shopping, officials said. Police listed the victim as Red Leonard Brown, operator of a sand company in Howard. Muscogee County Coroner C.F. Davis termed Brown’s death a suicide/ Police said Brown died about 4:30 p.m. from a .38-caliber bullet wound to the chest, while sitting in his car at Kirven’s parking lot off 1st Ave. Robert Miller, 18-year-old Negro youth of Howard, told police he chauffeured Mr. and Mrs. Brown to Columbus yesterday. Miller said he was in the car at the time Brown shot himself with a revolver. Miller said Mrs. Brown was shopping at the time of the incident. The Negro youth told officers that Brown was seated in the rear seat of the car while he was at the steering wheel. He added that he suddenly heard the gunshot and turned to find Brown slumped on the rear seat. Miller ran half a block up First Ave and found a policeman, who returned with him to the death scene. Police said there were powder burns on Brown’s coat and shirt indicating the weapon had been held nest to the body when it was fired. The pistol-owned by Brown- was found on the back seat near the body.
