W. Douglas, 78 years of age, died at his home near Butler at 8:30 o’clock Monday morning. Judge Douglas moved from Macon County to Taylor County about forty years ago. He served as Justice of the Peace of this county for about twenty years and was for a number of years’ chairman of the Taylor County Democratic Executive committee. He was a member of the Methodist church and had a large number of friends throughout the state. Several months ago Judge and Mrs. Douglas lost their large country home and several out-buildings by fire. Since that time Judge Douglas had not enjoyed his usual good health. Although his home was covered by insurance and he set to work immediately upon the erection of a new residence. The cause of Judge Douglas’ death was attributed to a heart attack which he suffered earlier in the morning. Funeral services for him were held at his residence at 2 o’clock Tuesday afternoon. Interment was held at Bethel cemetery near Butler. The Rev. F. J. Gilbert, pastor of the Butler Methodist church officiated. He was assisted by the Rev. Hugh Dozier, pastor of the local Baptist church. The services were conducted by members of the Fickling Masonice Lodge of which Mr. Douglas had capably served in a number of offices during his 20 years as a member of this order. Active pallbearers included the following: Messrs. W. W. Jarrell, T. B. Joiner, J. T. Cochran, O. D. Bankston, M. R. Williamson and T. E. Tante. Honorary pallbearers were: Col. C. C. Stone, Col. C. W. Foy, Messrs. Thelmon Jarell, P. B. Childs, R. S. West, E. D. Theus, R. P. McGuffin and I. O. Cox. Survivors include his wife, the former Mrs. Ida Hobbs and a large number of nieces and nephews. Additional Comments: Transcriber's note: The surname is spelled as Douglass on his gravestone while his obituary lists his name as Douglas. I'm not sure which spelling is correct.
