Sealy Passes Away Mr. John C. Sealy, after an illness of four days from pneumonia, quietly and peacefully fell asleep at his home here Tuesday night at 9:15 o’clock. Mr. Sealy’s death was such a surprise, having been ill only a short time, that his friends and the people of the town and community were greatly shocked when the sad news was rapidly spread Wednesday morning. Mr. Sealy was born near Howard, engaging in business at that place when a young man and where he was happily married to Miss Lovie Smith. He afterwards moved to Butler where for the past thirty years he, with his wife, have been engaged in the hotel business. Mr. Sealy, for a number of years while in Butler, was engaged as a salesman with Bateman & Colbert also with J.W. McCrary, and was regarded as the best salesman that Butler has had since the war. He knew what would suit the customer and suitable trimmings for the dress. And he was so pleasant and affable to all with whom he came in contact that he won for himself a host of friends, and who remained his friends until called to the home and heaven of the good. He was a member of the Methodist Church, and though not demonstrative in his life, yet, his heart was in the right place, and he was at all times a strong advocate of morality and pure, unselfish Christianity. He was universally loved and respected, and no one in the county was better known than Mr. John Sealy. He had a bright, sunshiny disposition and delighted to make those about him happy. He had a kind word and a pleasant smile for all. So it is no wonder that he will be greatly missed. He leaves a brokenhearted wife; two daughters, Mrs. Jewel Childs and Miss Janie Sealy; one son, Mr. Gurney Sealy, of Macon. Also three brothers, Messrs. Geo. C. Sealy, of Atlanta, Gus Sealy, of Montezuma, and A.H. Sealy of this county; one sister, Mrs. Droa Mathews, of Alexander City, Ala. The Butler Herald Thursday, December 6, 1917 Page Five Card of Thanks To the friends who came to us in our hour of trouble and deepest sorrow, through the illness and death of our beloved husband and father, and contributed all that human hearts, minds and hands could suggest and do, to help and comfort, we wish through the columns of the Herald to return most heartfelt thanks. More especially are we indebted to Dr. W.W. Edwards for his faithful, painstaking and skillful services in trying to restore him to health. Although such devoted friendship as that extended us cannot remove the sad memories that linger around our vacant chair, it brings into view the brightest side of humanity, and throws the pure light of an unselfish friendship into darkened homes. May the day be far distant when those friends who gathered around us will need similar attention, but when the time comes may they receive the same full measure of generous aid and tender sympathy they brought to our home.
