"Man" Hill Americus Ga-John "Man" Hill, 84, of Magnolia Manor Nursing Center in Americus, died there Monday. The funeral will be at 2 P.M. today at Giddens Funeral Home chapel in Ellaville, Ga. with burial in San Bethel Cemetery in Rupert, Ga. Mr. Hill was born Oct. 10 1897, in Taylor Co. son of Mr. & Mrs. John Bart Hill. A retired farmer, he "got up at sunrise to go to work, and didn't stop until sundown," said his son Roy Hill of Fayetteville, Ga. He was among the first of the predominantly peach growing Taylor County to start growing watermelons. "I was 8 or 9 when I started working with my father," said Hill, "and the watermelons were almost as big as I was.". All of the Hill children worked in the field, but never on a Sunday. A Baptist, "he Just didn't believe in working on Sunday." A sugar cane grower also the senior Hill made his own cane syrup and his wife, Gracie Lee Lawhorne Hill, "made the biscuits to go with it,"Hill said. "He loved walking. I guess he had walked a million miles." Survivors besides his wife include his daughter, Mrs. Inez Bell of Ellaville; another son Gene Hill of Albany Ga., a brother Marvin Hill of Vienna, Ga, four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.
