Hobbs I would like to submit the following obituary from The Butler Herald dated Feb. 1, 1887 IN MEMORIAM Editors-Butler Herald :- By Request, I send you a brief notice of the death of John M. Hobbs, who died of bronchitis, at his residence in Crawford county, November 13th, 1886. Deceased was the son of James and Rebecca Hobbs, was born in Warren or Upson county about the year 1823. His parents settled in Crawford county at an early stage of his life, where he grew up to manhood and married Nancy Gassett, who together with many children, yet live to mourn his death. It might truly be said, that he was the very embodiment of industry; and often laboring beyond reasonable physical endurance, he became a subject of chronic rheumatism, which so effected him bodily, that for many years he could neither walk nor sit in an upright position; yet he bore his affliction in great patience and continued to use all diligence in his power to provide for the wants and general welfare of his family, to the last days of his life, manifesting an energy and quiet in affliction that many might copy to their profit. Deceased was not a member by public profession of any religious body; yet he had on many occasions professed to believe and feel that Christ was his Savior; indeed he confessed to the writer, that he had desired often to state his feelings to the church; but had been restrained on account of his standing as a Free Mason. I answered, that in Christ - (illegible)- fullness, therefore we are to know nothing in the Church, save Christ and Him crucified; not things of the world, remains with the world. A few weeks past, he made a journey of near twenty five miles to ask baptism into the fellowship of the Church, but the pastor, failing to attend meeting at the time, his purpose was not fulfilled. His remains were interred at Bethel, near Cedar Creek in Taylor county on Monday after his death, Elder J. G. Murray conducting the funeral service. The many evidences of his faith in Christ assures us that his rest is eternal. Bennet Stewart NOTE: The obituary has some error in fact. John M Hobbs was born on May 5, 1821 in Warren county, Georgia. He was the son of James and Rebecca Marchant Hobbs. He married Nancy I. Gassett on March 27, 1843 in Crawford county, Georgia. John M. and Nancy had 10 children that I know of and most stayed in the area. Both John M. and Nancy are buried at the Sand Bethel Church cemetery 11 miles south of Butler on US hwy. 19 in Taylor County. Several Years ago I submitted a partial list of burials at Sand Bethel Richard Hobbs
