Camp At Andersonville At best death brings sorrow, but to be snatched into eternity without a moment’s warning brings grief of the deepest kind to those left behind. Such grief was visited upon this community in double portion Thursday night last when word was received that Mr. Frank McGuffin, son of Sheriff and Mrs. R. P. McGuffin, and Mr. Joe Watson, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. Watson, had been instantly killed, while three companions received only minor injuries, when a V-8 Ford sedan in which they were riding overturned on the Americus- Andersonville highway. All five young men, who are members of the CCC Camp located near Andersonville, had been over to Americus to attend an evening’s entertainment and were returning to the camp at a late hour Thursday night when the accident is said to have occurred on a sharp curve about halfway between Americus and Andersonville. McGuffin and Watson each received head and chest injuries, it is said and were dead before medical attention arrived. Their bodies were carried to Americus funeral parlors where they were prepared for burial and later removed to their respective homes in Butler and at Charing. Their three companions were taken to the Americus hospital where they received medical attention and were permitted to return to camp. Mr. McGuffin, who would have been 27 years old July 29th of this year was the eldest son of our proficient Sheriff, Mr. R. P. McGuffin and Mrs. McGuffin, and one of the best known young men of this community. Surviving him, besides his parents are two brothers, Messrs. Jack and Martell McGuffin; also two sisters, Mrs. Bessie Cooper of this county, and Mrs. Frank Hawkins, of Milledgeville. Mr. Joe Watson was the son of Mr. W. Watson and Mrs. Lessie Purvis Watson, of Charing community, this county. He was about 19 years of age. Surviving relatives include three brothers and five sisters to –wit: Messrs. George, Lewis and Archie Watson; Mrs. Tim (Claudia) Locke, Mrs. Boss (Clettie) Wall, Mrs. Dave (Maud) Harbuck, Mrs. H. G. (Marion) Pye and Mrs. Cecil (Evelyn) Gill. Funeral services for young Watson were held at Trinity church, 2 1-2 miles west of Charing, at 2 o’clock Friday afternoon, Rev. W. R. Lawhorn officiating the sad rites. At 4 o’clock Saturday afternoon, at the Butler Baptist church, funeral service for Mr. McGuffin were conducted by Rev. J. E. Pate and Rev. W. E. Hightower, and was pronounced one of the saddest services ever held in Butler and witnessed by an unusually large crowd of sympathizing friends. The floral offering was one of the most profuse and beautiful witnessed here in a long while. Out of respect to their comrades in life whom they held in high esteem members of the CCC Camp at Andersonville attended each of the funeral services enmass.
