Montgomery Pine Level Church, Mauk Circuit Columbus District, South Georgia Conference August 26th 1917 Early in the morning of April the fourth God, in His all wise Providence saw fit to remove from our midst, and from this earth that faithful servant of God (whom we all loved), Brother Seborn Montgomery. Brother Seborn was born in Taylor County, Georgia the 21st day of November, 1839. He united himself with the M.E. Church South, in early life became an active member performing every duty devolving upon him with credit to himself and the cause which he so much loved and labored for (the upbuilding of Christ’s Kingdom on Earth). He was a man of great ability and broad Christian influence. By his efforts, together with a few other faithful ones the church at Pine Level was organized about the year 1870. And as long as health would permit was always ready to aid in every good work of the church, in Sunday school, in prayer meeting and at home. He was the first to organize Sunday School at Pine Level, and in the capacity of superintendent and teacher was ever ready to instruct and lead in the pathway of righteousness and truth all who came to him for instruction. His Christian influence was nevertheless felt in his home. Around the fireside and the family altar, with the assistance of his devoted companion brought up their children in the way they should go, from which we trust they will not depart. Among his neighbors and friends he was willing, able and ready to help in every good cause. Firm in his convictions; generous and kind in his dealings with mankind; cheerful in disposition; worthy of the respect and admiration of all people; he wept with the weeping and rejoiced with those who rejoiced. Zealous in every Christian duty, his life was like a city set upon a hill, a bright and shining light that cannot be hid. His pathway seemed to grow brighter as the years passed by, which brought nearer and nearer the time when he would be permitted to hear that welcome applaudit, “Well done thou good and faithful servant, enter thou into the joys of thy Lord.” We, therefore resolve: First, That in the death of Brother Montgomery we, as church and Sunday school, have lost one of our most efficient and worthy members. That we humbly submit to the will of Him who doeth all things well. Knowing that the irreparable loss on earth is but the Eternal gain of Heaven. Second. That we extend to the bereaved family our most profound sympathy, and trust that, with the aid of Divine Grace, they will bear with Christian fortitude this sore affliction, ever looking forward to the time whey they will be permitted to share with him that everlasting joy on the Blissful shore were parting comes no more. Third. That we, in token of our love, and in memory of his great name, spread these presents upon the minutes of both church and Sunday school and leave therein a page blank, dedicated thereto. Fourth. That a copy be presented to the bereaved family and be published in the Butler Herald. S.R. Montgomery S.H. Harris W.M. Hays Committee Read and adopted by Pine Level Church and Sunday school, August 26, 1917. S.R. Montgomery, Sec. Additional Comments: Transcriber's note: Mr. Montgomery's first name was listed as Seborn in this article. I have checked with a researcher of the Montgomery family and believe the correct spelling of his name was Seaborn.
