Hill vjbhill@alltel.net November 25, 2003, 8:40 pm The Butler Herald, Vol. XXIX, No 24, April 18, 1905 A GOOD MAN GONE TO REST It is with pain we announce the death of Mr. J. W. Lipsey, which occurred at his home Sunday morning at 5 o'clock April 16th, after a painful illness of nearly three weeks. Mr. Lipsey had for a long while been a great sufferer from indigestion and heart trouble and it was with the greatest difficulty he attended to his business. On the 30th of March he was confined to his room and bed, though from then until his death he had the best medical attention and careful nursing--death at last came as a relief to his suffering. Mr. Lipsey was born in Bibb County, Ga., June 19th, 1847 and was married the first time to Miss Sarah L. Paul, of Bibb County, August 22nd 1867. Of this union four children were born, only one of shom, viz, Mrs. Lucile Ernest, of Macon is now living. Mr Lipsey's second marriage occurred in Macon, Ga., January 18th 1894 to Mrs. Annie E. Chapman, of this union two children survive who with a broken hearted wife mourn his death. Besides his wife he is survived by three children, two brothers, Mr. Burrell Lipsey of Savannah and Mr. J. B. Lipsey of Columbus, three sisters, Mrs. Laura Brooks, Mrs. Jones and Mrs. Ella Stalnaker, of Columbus, besides many friends to mourn their loss. Mr. Lipsey joined the Presbyterian Church in Macon in 1847 and from then until his death was true to the teachings of the Church and for a long while a member of the Masonic Lodge in Butler. The funeral services were held from the residence at 3 o'clock Monday p.m. by Rev. J. T. Adams, assisted by the pastor, Rev. W. O. Stephens, after which the interment took place at the cemetery with Masonic honors. Owing to his having long been identified with the mercantile interest of Butler all places of business was closed during the serice in respcect to his memory.
