Mr. W.H. Griffith, familiarly known as Uncle Billie, breathed his last last night at his home in Panhandle. Uncle Billie would soon have been 87 years old and for a long life had been daily preparing for those Mansions which Christ had gone before to prepare. Truly a good man has gone. A father in Israel has passed away. His saintly form will be interred this afternoon at Crowell Church. A more extended notice will appear soon. The Butler Herald Tuesday, May 19, 1896 Page Three The Death Roll Griffith At his house in Panhandle district on Sunday night last occurred the death of Uncle Billie Griffith, perhaps the oldest man in Taylor County, and one of the most reliable landmarks of the county. He had been entirely helpless for two or three years and while his death was no surprise yet it was sad to part with him. “Truly a prophet in Israel has fallen.” His life and character deserves more than we can give him at present. His remains were buried at Crowell on Monday. “Servant of God well done; rest from thy loved employ.” The Butler Herald Tuesday, July 21, 1896 Page Three Over The County Items Of Much Interest Gathered By Our Hustling Correspondents Reynolds, Ga., July 20th By J.T.A. A memorial service was held at Crowell Church yesterday in honor of Uncle Billie Griffith and Mr. J.E. Montfort who were nearly life long members of that church. Rev. I.F. Griffith, of Talbotton was present and added much to the interest of the occasion. The service was one of much profit to the church. Messrs. P.B. Griffith and family, E.A. Goddard, J.O. Mangham, E.A. Hollis and others from Reynolds attended the meeting. Rev. G.W. Childress will carry on the meeting this week. The Butler Herald Tuesday, July 21, 1896 Page Three Town and Country The largest assemblage of people ever seen at Crowell on any former occasion was present at the memorial service last Sunday of Uncle Billie Griffith and Mr. J.E. Montfort. The friends and relatives of the deceased came from all portions of the surrounding counties. Not more than half the congregation, it is said, could be seated in the church. Rev. I.F. Griffith was at his best and delivered of his most impressive sermons. It was a fitting tribute to the loving memory of a deceased friend and relative. After the sermon by Mr. Griffith loving tributes were paid to the memory of the deceased by many of their friends present. For many years Messrs. Griffith and Montfort were the pillows of Crowell Church and too much could not have been said in honor of their memory. May their Christian example live long in the hearts and memory of those who knew them. The editors of the Herald regret very much not being able to attend the service as both gentlemen were held in high esteem by us.
