John B. Fowler Capt. John B. Fowler, one of the oldest and most respected citizens of Butler, died at his home last Friday morning at 1:30 o’clock, after an illness of several months, resulting from the infirmities incidental to old age. Capt. Fowler was born Oct. 7, 1826, married Oct. 8th, 1856 and died Jan. 6th, 1911, thus living to the ripe old age of 84 years. Capt. Fowler served his country faithfully and valiantly in the War Between the States as Captain of Company F in the 57th Ga., regiment. After the war was over he came to Taylor County and spent several years teaching school, which vocation he followed until elected Clerk of Superior Court of Taylor County. This office he filled not only to the satisfaction of his constituency, but to the people as a whole. He was next elected Treasurer of this county and held this office until declining health from age forced his retirement. He joined the Masonic fraternity in 1848, and was prominently connected with this time honored institution for a long while, and his affiliation was only severed when he joined the Primitive Baptist Church. He remained a member of this church until called to the Church Celestial by the Master whom he faithfully followed all these years. Captain Fowler was faithful to every trust imposed, and officially and privately he made and left a record of whom none need be ashamed. He leaves two sisters, Mrs. Burnett, of Macon, and Mrs. Taylor, of Brunswick. There are also three sons, Mr. N.T. Fowler, of Butler, and Messrs. James and John Fowler of Macon County, besides quite a number of grandchildren and great grandchildren, who have left to them a legacy rich in nobleness and character, honesty of purpose and faithfulness to duty by this paternal parent. The funeral was conducted from the house by his much-loved friend, Rev. J.T. Adams, Saturday morning at 11 o’clock. The interment taking place in Butler cemetery.
