Cox, best known by his old comrades and friends as “Uncle Dick” Cox, died at the home of his only son, Mr. S.H. Cox, in Butler about five o’clock Monday morning. Mr. Cox was one of Taylor’s venerable and most esteemed citizens, being in his 77th year loved by old and young for his bright happy disposition and generous good deeds to all. After only a few days illness he succumbed to the weight of years and general infirmities incident thereto and laid down the burden and is now mingling with comrades on the other shore. Owing to his feeble condition for a long while the end was expected almost any day, nevertheless his death will cause a feeling of deep sorrow throughout this section where he has resided for the past 25 years or more. He came to this county from Talbot and engaged in farming in which he was always successful. With gallant Company B, Thirty-Second Georgia Regiment, he served his country faithfully through the four years of civil war and was discharged from this honorable service at Greensboro, N.C. in 1865. Mr. Cox was a faithful Christian and his religious influence was one well worthy of emulation. He was a member of the Primitive Baptist Church at Shiloh, Talbot County, to which place his remains will be taken today for interment. The Butler Herald Tuesday, August 22, 1911 Page Three Card of Thanks To our dear friends and neighbors who so kindly extended words of sympathy and acts of service, both in Butler and Shiloh during the illness, death and interment of our father, we extend our heartfelt appreciation. S.H. Cox The Butler Herald Tuesday, September 5, 1911 Page Three (Please note the memorial listed below was very lengthy. I have transcribed only portions of it, which contain genealogical information.) A Tribute to the Memory of Mr. John A. Cox Mr. John Anderson Cox was born in Jones County, Georgia, September 10, 1833. Married Sara Ann King, of Talbot County, November 2, 1854, and moved to Taylor County in 1879. Joined the Primitive Baptist church 1892, and departed this life at the home of his son, S.H. Cox, in Butler, Ga., Aug. 14, 1911. Thus we have chronicled briefly some of the most important events in the life of this grand old man. He came of good blood, an ancestry noted for uprightness of life, honest of purpose and truthfulness. Brother Cox is survived by one son, Mr. S.H. Cox. And it is remarkable that father and son have lived together all of the son’s life, except the three years the father was in the army of the Confederacy, which place as a soldier he filled so valiantly and well. The body of this good man was buried at Horeb church by a number of his old comrades Aug. 15th. Written by J.T. Adams Butler, Ga., Sept. 1st.
