A Young Life Ruthfully Snuffed Out

While squirrel hunting, son of Mr. J.T. Peacock shot himself and died one hour 
later

Grady Peacock, aged 14 years, and a companion of about the same age by the name 
of McDaniel, were strolling along Jackson branch near the Peacock home Saturday 
afternoon looking for squirrels.  Grady was carrying the gun.  As they were 
climbing over a rail fence Grady dropped his gun and as it fell the hammer 
struck a piece of wood, which caused it to fire.  The entire load of birdshot 
struck the boy in the right side just under the arm.  The right lung was torn 
out and the full load left remaining in the boy’s body.  In this condition the 
boy with manly courage attempted to walk home with blood streaming from the 
ghastly wound, but his strength soon failed him and he sank to the ground where 
he lay until assistance came.  His companion, who was dreadfully frightened, 
ran with great haste for assistance, which soon arrived, and the unfortunate 
lad removed to his home about which time he died.  He was conscious to the end 
and was able to tell in detail how the accident occurred.

Drs. Edwards and Gordy responded as quickly as possible to a hurry call to the 
Peacock home, but the boy died before they reached him.  The wound was of such 
nature that death would have resulted had the physicians been with him when the 
accident occurred and it is remarkable that he lived the hour he did after the 
shooting.

The funeral Sunday was indeed a sad one.  The boy was highly esteemed because 
of his exceptionally fine character and that his life should have been so 
ruthfully cut off caused his friends deep sorrow while the family is almost 
prostrated with grief.  They have the sympathy of all their friends in their 
grief.

The body was interred at Bethlehem Sunday afternoon, one of the largest 
gatherings ever attending a burial at that place being present.
