Lockett, a life long citizen of Taylor County, while engaged in his office in Reynolds last Thursday afternoon at one o’clock was stricken very suddenly and died before medical aid could be summoned. While Mr. Lockett had for a long time been in a feeble state of health, yet he appeared to be stronger and more hopeful during the last few days of his life. For a number of years Mr. Lockett was prominent in the agricultural and business interest of the county, was a soldier in the Confederate army who evidenced his loyalty to the cause by undaunting courage and unyielding patriotism. He was a man of undoubted veracity and untarnished honor, a Mason true and tried. The funeral service took place from the home of his daughter, Mrs. J.A. Matthews Friday afternoon conducted by Rev. E.W. Anderson, assisted by Rev. J.T. Adams, at the conclusion of which the Masons of Reynolds and Butler together took charge of the remains and conducted them to the Corbin cemetery, where in the presence of a large concourse of people, where the body of this honored citizen was duly interred with Masonic honors. At the request of E.W. Marshall, W.M., of Burns Lodge No. 56, Rev. J.T. Adams, of Butler, presided over this emergent Lodge, the pall bearers: Hon. O.T. Montfort, Prof. A.S. Wallace, of Butler, W.M. Musselwhite, J.T. Lucas and W.I. Powell who were lifelong friends of the deceased. Dr. Porter, Col. W.E. Steed, Messrs. C.E. Benns and J.J. McCants, Jr., also of Butler attended the funeral services. Mr. Lockett is survived by two daughters, Mrs. J.A. Matthews, of Reynolds and Miss Emma Lockett, of Macon, and two sons, Messrs. Robert and James Lockett.
