Pope Claimed By Death Passed Away Friday at Macon Hospital After a Brief Illness Herbert J. Pope, the son of Mr. and Mrs. C.A.J. Pope, both deceased, was born in Butler April 6, 1876, and was educated in Butler M & F College. After his school days he was engaged in the printing business in Reynolds. April 11, 1897 he was happily married to Miss Mintie Adams, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.A. Adams, of Reynolds. For several years he was engaged in the mercantile business in Butler. Brother Herbert’s father having been a strong believer in the principles of Masonry, the son’s heart was naturally drawn to that time-honored institution, so that his application having been duly received and passed upon, he was initiated as Entered Apprentice Feb. 24, 1899, and on March 24th following he was passed to the more honorable degree of Fellow Craft, and on April 22nd of the same year he was raised to the sublime degree of Master Mason. And his untimely death occurred in the Macon hospital last Friday afternoon, Sept. 24th, at 5 o’clock. His remains, accompanied by his wife and three children, his wife’s sister, Mrs. W.M. Musselwhite, and Mr. Louis Beeland, reached Butler Saturday morning. The funeral service was conducted from the residence Saturday afternoon by Rev. J.H. Stanford, assisted by Rev. J.T. Adams. An Emergent Lodge of Master Masons was called, officered at follows: Rev. J.T. Adams, W.M.; J.T. Lucas, S.W.; J.T. Mathews, J.W.; T.F. Layfield, Treas.; Otis McCants, Sec’ty.; C.E. Benns, S.D.; J.G. Stokes, J.D.; J.J. McCants, Sr., S.S., I.W. Garrett, J.S.; A.S. Wallace, Chaplain; J.H. Taunton, Tyler. Pall bearers: W.E. Steed, R.L. Bodiford, Eli Garrett, Will Neisler, S.E. Cox, J.E. Locke, J.W. Edwards and Herbert Wilchar. The Craft escorted the remains to the cemetery where the body was laid to rest with the usual Masonic ceremonies, witnessed by a large concourse of sympathetic friends and relatives. Brother Herbert Pope loved Masonry and was active in the discharge of very official duty reposed in him. He was prompt in his attendance and often sacrificed time and comfort (paper torn for several sentences). As a neighbor he was obliging and self-sacrificing, the many noble and (paper torn) traits of character I his (paper torn) more strongly portrayed (paper torn) home as a father and husband. He loved the home and it was his great desire to make it attractive and pleasant for his loved ones, and the broken, bleeding hearts of he wife, his two daughters, Miss Wynelle and Louise, and his son, Ralph, are sad but living evidence of the true worth of the husband and father whom they have lost.
