Matthews Mrs. Matthews was born Dec. 17th 1858, and died Feb. 19th 1891. She was the daughter of Major W.H. and Mrs. C.E. Fickling, of Fickling, Ga. She was married to Mr. Thomas F. Matthews Dec. 15th 1881. When the news of her death reached her friends, many a sad heart went out in sympathy for the bereaved loved ones, for we all loved her. For the most part of her reserve and shrinking delicacy threw a veil over her beautiful character except to those with whom she was more intimately associated. But wherever she was she almost silently spread around her that pure light of soul, the preciousness of which is never fully understood , till it is quenched. Her calm, gentle nature; her sympathy, which though so tender, was too serene to disturb her clear perception, fitted her to act instinctively without the consciousness of either party. She was truly a spirit of good, diffusing a tranquilizing influence too mildly to be thought of, therefore the more sure. Alas! that such a beautiful character should have been taken away from earth, to fairer, higher climes, to bask forever in the sunlight of God’s unending and unfading love. How greedy and selfish is death to stroll through life’s garden and steal therefrom one of its purest and sweetest flowers. J.S.
