L. Ogburn Published in Gospel Messenger (1885 Vol 7 No 8)and reprinted October 2001 The Taylor Tracer pg 23 J. L. Ogburn, Deacon of New Hope Church in Taylor County Georgia born in Houston County August 27, 1849 and baptized into Bethlehem Church, Taylor County Georgia by Elder J. P. Glover December 7, 1872; married Sister Mary E. Glover ceremony performed by the writer July 18, 1880. Ordained Deacon at New Hope (in much confidence) Elders Samuel Bentley, Bennett Stewart, John Richard Respess and Joshua F. Sikes on May 5, 1883; died April 7, 1885 leaving a bereaved wife and three daughters, aged father and mother, several sisters, his church, and all acquaintances, in proportion to their kinship and association. In every stage and capacity in which natural or spiritual ilfe placed him, we feel that we can safely say as much for Brother Jimmy Ogburn as any man with whom we were ever associated; but an all wise God, who passed him into a world of trouble through Adomic nature, and in the fullness of the time raised him up in our midst as a monument of his power, mercy and grace for a period (O how short!) has now passed him out through the portals of the grave, but (as we hope) into the safe wayof eternal life, where the redeemed shall all rest with the (once) bleeding Head of the Church. One in nature and one in spirit with our brother we hope to be one in beholding the glory of God. May the Lord reconcile us to every dispensation of his providence. Elder Joshua F. Sikes, Byron, Ga. ========================= THE BUTLER HERALD, Taylor Co., Ga., April 14, 1885 Our community was made sad by the death of Mr. James L. Ogburn, which sad event occurred at his residence last Thursday after an illness of but a few days. He was once one of the leading merchants of our place. He sold out his merchantile interest and moved to the country some months ago, and began farming, and also engaged in the saw mill business. Certainly his loss is irreparable. He leaves a wife and three children together with a large circle of friends and relatives to mourn his loss. P. G. NOTES: (Byrd-Glover Cemetery - Taylor County) James L.
