Schrimshire Mr. James V. Schrimshire, formerly of Potterville, but for the past year of Northhighland, Columbus, died at his home there last Friday afternoon, his remains were brought to Reynolds Saturday afternoon and interred in the Potterville cemetery Sunday morning at 11 o’clock. No one in and around Potterville and Reynolds was better known than “Jim” Schrimshire, and no one was better beloved. He had no enemies, but all, young and old, rich and poor loved him. Brother “Jim” had lived nearly all his life in Potterville, having moved there with his father in early life. He was a member of the Methodist church, and with him, church membership meant something, not a meaningless term, but fraught with obligations and responsibilities and righteous living. He made no ostentatious display of his religious profession, but endeavored day by day to live right with his fellow man and with God. The writer knew him well, and from intimate association with him around his fireside in the home circle, in his contact with the business world, in the Masonic Lodge and in the church, he ever found him true to his convictions of duty and steadfast in his adherence to the principles of right living. Brother Jim had been in declining health for quite a while and was confined to his bed for about one week, the attending physician claiming that he had Bright’s disease. His remains were accompanied by his brokenhearted wife, his pastor, Rev. H. Stevens, of Northhighland and his true and tried friend, J.B. Bowden, who attended him lovingly and faithfully during his illness and was with him at the time of his death. Also Mr. and Mrs. Sherod Wilson. The funeral service was conducted by his pastor, Rev. H. Stevens, assisted by Rev. J.T. Adams and Rev. Mr. Edwards, after which the remains were interred with Masonic honors witnessed by a large concourse of sympathizing friends and loved ones. The following were pallbearers: Messrs. J.M. Weaver, J.J. Edwards, J.B. Bowden, W.I. Powell, H.H. Aultman, J.I. Fuller, G.R. Lucas and Eugene Davis. Besides his widow and aged father, he leaves six sons, Jesse, Will, Hubert, Jim, Harvie and Eddie, and three daughters, Eva, Elba and Florine. Some of the sons on account of being away from home, were prevented from attending the burial service. He was 46 years of age. J.T.A. Additional Comments: Transcriber's note: Jim Schrimshire was a son of Robert Wilson Schrimshire and Sarah Fannie Simpson. He was an older half-brother of my great-grandmother,Gussie Schrimshire Adams. Jim was married to Georgia Layfield, who was a sister of my great-grandfather, Ed Layfield. I would like to correspond with anyone researching this family. The date of death given on the Mt. Olive Cemetery listing on the Taylor County page gives Jim's date of death as June 16, 1918, but this obituary proves he passed away in 1917.
