Slappy, after a lingering illness of several months from pulmonary troubles, sweetly fell asleep at his home in Butler at two o'clock on Thursday morning last, surrounded by his family and other friends and loved ones. The death of Mr. Slappy though sad, was no surprise for it had long been expected and this fatal moment was only stayed by the kind hand of Providence together with the careful attention he had received from a loving wife and eminent physicians. He had tried all the skill that physicians could devise together with the climate of other lands but all to no avail. Mr. Slappy through all these months of suffering was patient and uncomplaining. As a father and husband he was kind, as a citizen, he was enterprising and as a Christian, his life was well worthy of emulation. He was one of the most enterprising merchants of Butler who for several years had been quite successful in business and will be sadly missed in business, church and social affairs. He was a member of the Methodist church and a liberal supporter to its cause. Mr. Slappy was in the 40th year of his age and was loved by all who knew him. In his afflictions he had the sympathy of all. He leaves a devoted wife, mother, three children besides many friends and loved ones to mourn their loss. The funeral services were conducted from his late residence by Rev J.T. Ainsworth and his remains were interred in the cemetery near the Baptist church on Thursday afternoon, the following special friends acting as pall bearers: Rev J.T. Adams, Judge J.E. Davant and Messrs. M.B. McCrary, D.A. Jones, W.N. Benns and I.F. Peebles. The attendance of sympathizing friends was very large. May his rest be sweet and in the resurrection morn may he arise to dwell among the saints above.
