C. Watson Is Claimed By Death After Long Illness Died at Georgia Baptist Hospital, Where He Had Been A Patient For Three Weeks Mr. P. C. Watson, known to his innumerable host of devoted friends as “Perry Watson,” breathed his last at the Georgia Baptist Hospital in Atlanta Monday morning at 4 o’clock after a long and patient illness although admitted to the hospital only three weeks ago. Mr. Watson, who was in the 75th year of his age, born of honorable parents, spent his entire life of useful labor in Taylor County, his home being in the south-western section of the county, near Mauk where he owned large tracks of lands and other valuable real estate. He was considered one of the largest and most successful farmers and business men of this section. Among Mr. Watson’s many fine traits of character was his charitable disposition and deeds of kindness to those in need of financial and other assistance. He was never married but contributed largely to the education and in getting a start in life of many young men and women bound to him by the cards of love as well as that of relation. He never united with the church, but to all denominations in him they found a loyal friend and liberal contributor. He was a love of Masonry of which fraternity he had been a member, both of the Blue Lodge and Chapter of Mauk and Americus, respectively, since early manhood. Mr. Watson will be greatly missed not only by the people of his immediate section, but by those far and wide who knew him to love him devotedly. Mr. Watson was the last member of a once large and influential family and is survived by a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral and interment took place at Pine Level cemetery Tuesday afternoon at three o’clock service being conducted by Rev. H. L. Lumpkin, assisted by Rev. Whatley, life-long friends of the deceased. The Butler Herald Thursday, January 27, 1938 Page Three Mauk News Our people were shocked Monday morning when the news came that Mr. P. C. Watson had died at the Georgia Baptist hospital in Atlanta. Mr. Watson went there for treatment for a carbuncle on the back of his neck and news was received here Sunday morning that he was improving. Messrs. Will and J. H. Turner, Reuben Harris, and John Brady went to Atlanta Sunday to see him and when they arrived they found that he had become suddenly worse Saturday afternoon and all hopes for his recovery had vanished. He passed away at 4:30 o’clock Sunday afternoon. His remains were brought back Tuesday and laid to rest by the side of his brother, who was brought back from Dr. Thrash’s Sanitarium in Atlanta Jan. 29, 1912, at Pine Level cemetery. He was a life-long resident of this community, was in his 77th year, and the last member of a large family of children. He has number of nieces and nephews in different parts of Georgia, Florida, and Texas. Additional Comments: Perry Calvin Watson, often seen in news articles and other records as P. C. Watson, was the son of Perry Watson and Martha Hart. He was a successful businessman and had a fruit farm in Mauk, Georgia where he sold five varieties of peaches. His name was often mentioned in the social columns of the Butler Herald as he had many friends and family and active in his community. Perry is my 3rd great-uncle. I've researched the Watson family since 2000 and learned a great deal about them. If you're related to them and have family photos or other records, please contact me.
