Newton Corp. Co F 27 GA Inf 13 Sep 1835 27 Sep 1862 Additional Comments: William James Newton was the son of Daniel and Elizabeth Newton. Brother of Julia Newton Dixon (w/o Hillard Dixon), Martha A Newton Ray (w/o John Ray), Sarah A Newton Pitman (w/o Micajah Pitman), D. Jeptha Newton (h/o Rose Ann Barfield), and Jacob J. Newton (h/o Mary A. Thompson). William James Newton's service records state he had been ill since Jan 1862 and was finally discharged on 31 Jul 1862. He was suffering from typhoid pneumonia and was extremely emaciated. Thus the decision was made to send him home. He died within 2 months of his discharge and is buried in Prosperity Cemetery. James Newton was the first husband of Cyntha/Cynthia Massey, daughter of Kimbrell and Lucinda Massey. Cyntha later married the husband of her deceased sister Jane Massey McGuirt (w/o John O. McGuirt). Cyntha is buried beside her second husband, John McGuirt, in Morgan Cemetery, Morgan, Calhoun Co., GA. William J. and Cyntha Newton were the parents of Mary "Mollie" V. Newton, wife of James T. Pellum and William G. Newton.
