DODGE COUNTY NEWSPAPER CLIPPINGS Volume II., 1893-1907 By: Tad Evans Page 692 Friday, April 15, 1898 A STRANGE DEATH. Mr. W. N. Pickren, a thriving farmer in this county, met his death Saturday in a peculiar manner. Report says that he had been to the town of Rhine, and in sight of his house, returning home, he shot himself in the thigh severing an artery. He was holding a jug of whiskey in the other hand at the time of the shot, and the mule, frightened at the report, jumped, throwing Mr. Pickren to the ground, breaking his neck. The wife saw the mule throw her husband and hastening to the scene found him dead. It is not known if he intended to kill himself. Additional Comments: Compiler Notes: I look at the 1898 Calendar. It stated he met his death on Saturday. Saturday would have been 9 April 1898. The Dodge County Cemetery Book list his death date as 4 April 1898 and that would be on a Monday. I believe the date on his grave is in error. The date above is the way it should have been listed on his grave. It is recorded as Saturday, April 9,1898. To match the Obituary.
