Abbeville Chronicle Abbeville, Wilcox County, Georgia Thursday, February 24, 1938 Front Page MRS. J. D. Ryals, the grand old mother of Abbeville, died at her home at 9:30 o’clock last Sunday night. She was 82 years old, and for more than a year had been confined to her bed most of the time. A short time before her death she had a sinking spell from which she never revived. She was the widow of the late D. J. Ryals who preceded her to the grave. Before her marriage to Mr. Ryals she was a Studstill and the late William Studstill of Telfair county was her father. She and her husband moved here from Telfair county 32 years ago. They acquired the Central Hotel and formany years this hotel was one of the leading hostelries in this section of the state. All these years she directed the management of this hotel up to almost her last days. She was a member of the Methodist church and the funeral services were conducted by her pastor, Rev. J. E. Summer, of the First Methodist Church, assisted by Rev. H. J. Johnston of the First Baptist Church, being held on Monday afternoon at the hotel. After the services the body was carried to Cordel where it was interred beside that of her husband. Pall bearers were grandson and nephews of Mrs. Ryals: Regional Johnson, Marion Maloy, M. R. Clements, grandsons; Preston Rawlins and J. C. Studstill, nephews, and M. A. Brantley, who married a granddaughter. She is survived by two sons: S. L. and J. D. Ryals, of Cordele; four daughters, Mrs. Lola Maloy of Milan, Mrs. J. M. Clements of Cordele, Mrs. Mina Bleckley and Mrs. R. H. Johnson of Abbeville. Also four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren survive, also mmany nices and nephews. She was related to about all of the known Ryals family of Dodge and Telfair counties. She was before marriage, Miss Caroline Frances Studstill, She was named after her mother who was before marriage, Miss Frances Elizabeth McCormick (1823-1907) of Pulaski County, as stated her father was William C. Studstill (1820- 1903). Both are buried at Concord Methodist Church Cemetery, Telfair County., Georgia.
