NC. He was the son of William Wooten (1710-1792) of Edgecombe Co. NC. He served in the Revolution in a company of Capt. Woods’ Cavalry, Col. Malmedy’s Regiment, North Carolina Troops. Also in Col. Long’s Regiment (“Roster of N.C. Soldiers in The American Revolution”, page 617 and other authorities). Joel Wooten married Miss Elizabeth Jordan (1760-1826 in Telfair Co. GA.) He lived in Edgecombe Co. until 1800 when he moved with his family to Burke County, Georgia, then about 1805 to Montgomery County, Georgia, which was then cut into Telfair County when it was created in 1809. Wyatt Parrish, 12 Sept. 1826 Joel Wooten served on the first Grand Jury in Telfair County, April Term, 1810. He was commissioned Justice of The Peace in Telfair County, 29 April 1809. He died in Telfair County in 1813. Record is found in Telfair of a deed to him from Holmes Gwin 28 March 1809, for Lot 269, 7th district of formerly Wilkerson County, but at that time and now, Telfair (Deed Book “A”, page 25); also deed from his widow , Elizabeth, to their son, Simon Wooten, 31 March 1826, to Lot 270, 7th district (Book “H”, page 29). In June 1983, DAR marker was placed in Telfair Co. in memory of Joel Wooten. The site of the marker is in a family cemetery on land originally granted to Joel Wooten for his military service in the Revolutionary War. The cemetery is now located on land behind Lumber City Egg Marketers, on Highway 341, North of Lumber City, GA. Point of contact is: Allen Houston, Lumber City, GA. The dedication ceremonies were led by descendant Dr. L. C. Alderman, Georgia state President, SAR, and Mrs. Alderman, DAR State Regent.
