Ames, the Showman. ALBANY, GA., Nov. 5. - The following are the particulars of a fatal affray at Dawson, Ga., on the 2nd inst., which resulted in the death of two men, and a lady wounded. A man named H.R. Russell, in an intoxicated condition, asked the doorkeeper of a side show the price of admission and passed his family in and asked the doorkeeper how many. The doorkeeper replied nine. Russell said four. The doorkeeper said he would call the family back to prove that Russell was mistaken. Russell got angry and struck the doorkeeper, nearly knocking him down. He then drew a pistol and threatened to blow the doorkeeper's brains out. The latter said he meant no offence. Russell, still threatening, cocked his pistol, and the keeper ran inside of the canvass. Colonel Ames, being near, approached and remarked to Russell that that was not the place to get up a difficulty. Russell responded that he would kill him too, and shot at Col. Ames. Another circus man remonstrated with Russell, and then the Kelly brothers, known as desperate characters, approached and commenced firing. Col. Ames was shot twice while endeavoring to escape. A spectator named Oxford, while holding a child in his arms was instantly killed, the child was taken from under his dead body. The lady who was wounded was inside the canvass. Col. Ames died on the afternoon of the 3d. His body was escorted to Macon by the City Council of Dawson. The men have been removed to Cuthbert, Ga., and confined in a secure jail. Col. Ames was the proprietor of the Crescent City Museum in New Orleans. - ED.
