TAIT: Born 1805 GA, died Dec 1873 in Decatur Co. GA. He married CATHERINE born 1810 GA. Records found on William A and Catherine Tait state he was a farmer and a Minister. He moved every 10 years around the State of Georgia. He was the first minister of Summer Hill Baptist Church in Thomas Co. GA yr 1850. All of his son's served in the CivilWar and from records found and those yet to be found, only 2 returned home. Land record in Marion Co., GA Lyddal Bacon was deeded Lot #134 of the 31st District, byWilliam A.Tait on November 13, 1839. Land record in Thomas Co., GA November 12, 1852 William A. Tait from H.A. Wilson & Tulfords WD F 206 245 Acres LL153 Summer Hill Baptist Church (Primitive at first, later Missionary) of Stewart Co.,in the 22nd district, was constituted in 1837 and dissolved in 1905 and the building torn down and sold September 10, 1852. About six miles northwest of Boston, in the 13th district of Thomas Co., a New Baptist Church was constituted and located at the cross roads of the Old Tallahassee Florida Greenfield Chruch of Colquitt Co., road and the present Thomasville and Summer Hill Road. Most of the Charter members were from Shady Grove Chruch and all were former residents of Steward County and Possibly some were members of Summer Hill Church of Stewart Co. Rev. William A. Tait a former pastor of Summer Hill Church in Stewart Co., was the first Pastor. Francis Groom was the first chruch cleark to be elected but soon resigned and was succeeded by Johathan Groom Miller. Tait age 66 Catherine Tait age 60 Jack Tait age 5 (Relationship Unknown) Thursday, June 23, 1870 Newspaper Clipping Mr. Jack Tait, the young man who was wounded a few days since while attempting to make his escape from the Sheriff is improving slowly. (Mr. Jack Tait shot a man of color in Decatur County GA.) 2nd Generation JAMES HENRY TAIT: Born in GA October 1824, the first born to William A. and Catherine Tait. He married first to MARTHA BACON in Marion Co., 1843 and she died following the birth of their last child in 1861. She is buried in Thomas Co., GA. Martha Bacon Tait was the dtr of Lydall and Elizabeth Bacon previously of VA and SC. Lydall Bacon died in Marion Co., Georgia October 25, 1854. Her mother Elizabeth was supposedly a lady with the maiden name of Cooke. The siblings to Martha were Elizabeth, Sarah, Langston and Edmond Bacon. James Tait moved every 10 years with his father and on December 31, 1862 he enlisted inthe Civil War. He joined Co., H, 3rd Batt'n Cavalry, which later became Co. H. 4 Reg't Georgia Cavalry. Records states that on October 31, 1863 he was dispatched to hunt deserters. Towards the end of the war he was promoted to Sgt. On May 25, 1865He was paroled in Thomasville, Georgia. He surrendered to Brig. General E.M. McCook by Major General Sam Jones CSA, at Tallahassee, Florida. After the War, James returned home, and was listed in the 1870 census records as being a buggy maker and a farmer. He remarried to Sarah Jane Hart and had two more children. Together they moved from Georgia to Madison Co., Florida were Mary Tait (Darville) was born. Sarah died in 1883. James became sick during the war and on July 23, 1900 heapplied for a Soldiers Pension, which after records from Doctors, he recieved a total of $72.00 per year until his death in 1907. 1880 Brooks Co., GA Petit Court James H. The second son of William A. and Catherine Tait.He enlisted as a Private on 04 October 1861 in Thomas Co., GA. Enlisted in Co. K 29th Regiment. POW on 17 July 1863 at Jackson, MS. Paroled on 26 February 1865 at Camp Morton, IN. Transferred on 26 February 1865 at City Point, VA for exchange. I have not been able to as of yet to find any further records on Madison. WILLIAM H. TAIT: Born in 1832 Georgia. The third son of William A. and Catherine Tait.Not much is known on him at this time. He enlisted in Feb 20, 1862 in Capt. Hopkins Co of Cavalry(Wayne Rangers*) This company subsequently became Company A, 4th Regiment (Clinchs Ga Cavalry. It was also known as Co. C Battalion of Cavalry South of the Altamaha River. On his records states under remarks: Due him by Goverment hire of his shotgun from June 1, 1862 to Feb, 28 1863. He also collected a allowance for his horse in the amount of $24.40. Also transferredto Co. F from Co A August 1, 1863., transferred to Capt. J. Turner GA F 4 GA Cav. Sept 1863. He was detached to hunt deserters Feb, 186 during the Civil War. Tait a private of the 4th Ga regiment of Cav do solemnly swear that I will not bear arms against the United States of America or give any information or do any military duty whatsoever until regularly exhanged s a prsoner of war. She married in Stewart Co., GA, Frances M. Brooks, 07 Jan 1850.Her husband Francis joined the Civil War from Randolph Co., GA. He enlisted as a Private on 26 September 1861 in Company H. 1st State Troops Regiment. Mustered out Company H, on 05 May 1862 and Enlisted in Company G, 55th Infantry Regiment on 17 May 1862. POW on 09 September 1863 at Cumberland Gap, Tn. Released on 18 June 1865 at Camp Douglas, Chicago, IL. 1850 Stewart Co., Census pg 67 Brooks, Frances age 21 Farmer Mary age 17 1870 Randolph Co., Census pg 669 Brooks, Francis M. age 31, Farmer Brooks, Mary age 24 Brooks, Charles age 9 Brooks, Eudora age 6 Brooks, {?} age 1 BRANTLEY M. TAIT: Born in Elbert Co, GA 1836, the 4th son of William A. and Catherine Tait. He married in Thomas Co. GA to MARTHA ANN BROWING yr 1859. He enlisted with the 1st Brailsford Co. July 1862 at Camp WIlliams. Records then note thathe joined in with the 5th Cav. Co H in the Civil War. It is not known what became of Brantleyas he never returned home. Last note on his Civil War papers states that he destertedhis unit June 23, 1863. I belive that he was killed in battle and is buried in a unmarked grave. He served in the Civil War, joined the (Clinchs) Cav. Co. A. F along with his older brother William H. Not much is known of him at this time. CHARLES M. TAIT: born in Marion Co. GA 1837 the 6th son of William A. and Catherine Tait. Married MAGDALENE born in GA yr 1840 {Maiden name unknown}. He served with the GA 2nd Co. K Cavalry Regiment organized in Feb, 1862. The regiment surrendered with 18 men by General Johnston in N.C. 26 April 1865. Children born: John F. Tait 1870, Mattie Lou, Emma K. John Miles Hurst was born in 1838 and died on 17 November 1901 in La Fayette Co., Florida. He enlisted in Captain Brailsford Co., on May 1862. Pension records state that he surrendered in Tallassee, Florida May 1865. He is listed on the 1850 census records as the son of Thomas J. Hurst. 1880 Madison Co., Florida Census Records John M. The son of James Henry and Martha Tait. He moved to Dade City, Pasco Co. Florida after the Civil War. He married first CATHERINE WILSON (1854-1879) second NANCY (NANNY) ANN CROFT (1859-1957). He was a farmer and worked for the Pasco Co., Road Department.
