NOTE: In the 1860 census of Thomas County, Georgia JOHN GRIFFIN, age 52 and his Wife SARAH, age 25 are listed with the children MITCHELL, age 21; ELIZA, age 18; NOAH, age 13; SALLIE, age 12; RACHAEL, age 11; MARTHA, age 8 and MARY, age 4. It was known that JOHN GRIFFIN had been married more than once. It is noted from this that his Wife, SARAH, age 25, was quite a bit younger. It is assumed that his Wife, ELISA must have died sometime between 1850 and 1860. JOHN GRIFFIN’s Great-Grandaughter, LELLA OTIS GRIFFIN (MRS HORACE WALTER BROWN had noted that he had come to Madisonville, Texas in the late 1870’s or early 1880’s and to visit his Son, JAMES NOAH GRIFFIN and Wife FRANCES J HALE. It is understood that he and his Wife SARAH and some of their children are buried in the Old Primitive Baptist, now Church of Christ Cemetery and near Madisonville, Texas. The MARTHA GRIFFIN, noted in the paragraph above, according to records found by DONALD GRIFFIN of Georgia, had married M GREENE BAILEY on October 22 1873. ============ Civil War Veteran James Noah Griffin: JAMES NOAH GRIFFIN was born in Thomasville, Georgia on September 15 1845 and died September 12 1921 and is buried in Coleman, Texas. He was married to his Wife, FRANCES J HALE on May 10 1866. She was born in Burke County, Georgia on August 14 1851 and died September 12 1931 and is buried in Coleman, Texas. In the Thomasville, Georgia Registry of Marriages there is listed a JOHN GRIFFIN being married to an ELIZABETH HALE on page 74 Book H, however it is dated February 2 1858. In some records given by JAMES NOAH GRIFFIN's Wife, it was noted that they were married on May 10 1866. This date of May 10 1866 is most likely correct. It is understood and from some stories that JAMES NOAH GRIFFIN used to tell, and about his experiences during the Civil War, that after the War he just dropped the reins of his horse and started walking to Texas, it being quicker to get there that way. Attached to this History of the GRIFFIN's, there is a "CIVIL WAR VETERAN's REQUEST FOR PENSION". It goes into quite a bit of detail and does verify his involvement in the Civil War. His tombstone in the Cemetery in Coleman, Texas reflects his being a Private in Company E, 20th Battalion Georgia Cavalry CSA. It is unknown exactly when JAMES NOAH departed Georgia or how long it took him to walk to Texas. From his pension records and from the War Department, the Adjutant General's Office, Washington, D. C., September 11 1915 it states; Quote Respectively returned to the Commissioner of Pensions, State of Texas, Austin. The Confederate records show that one NOAH GRIFFIN, (name JAMES N GRIFFIN not found), Private, Company E, 20th Battalion Georgia Cavalry, CSA, enlisted February 20 1864, at Thomasville, and on the company roll covering the period from August 31 to October 31 1864, last on file, he was reported present. The Union Prisoner of War records show that one J N GRIFFIN, Private, 10th Georgia Cavalry (company not stated), CSA, was surrendered by MAJOR GENERAL SAM JONES, CSA, at Tallahassee, Fla., May 10, 1865, and was paroled at Madison, Fla., May 14, 1865. There are no rolls on file for the 10th Georgia Cavalry, CSA, nor has any further record been found.
