LAURENS COUNTY., GA. THOMAS COUNTY., GA Sugar Forest was born abt 1807 in Edgefield County., South Carolina and died in Thomas County., Georgia on 13 November 1885. He was the son of Jesse Forrest who was born abt 1762 in Bute/Warren Co., N.C. and died 1824 in Laurens Co., Ga and Sally (?) of whom we no little about. He appears on the 1850/60 Census of Thomas County., Ga. and on the 1870 Census of Jefferson County., Florida. He was a Deacon of the Friendship Baptist Church located at Metcalf ., Thomas Co. and one of its chartered members. Sugar married first Annie Montgomery the daughter of Captain Samuel Montgomery who died abt 1832 in Lauren Co., Ga and Sarah (?) who died 14 June 1820 in Laurens Co., Ga. We found Samuel Montgomery marring again in Laurens Co., Ga. to a Mrs. Elizabeth Howell on the date of 5 November 1826. As well as we could determine there were no children from the last marrage. Sugar and Annie Montgomery were probably married in Laurens County., Ga. but we were unable to locate this marriage. All the children were born in Laurens County., Georgia. They are: 1. Sarah Jane Forrest was born 23 February 1831 in Laurens County., Ga. and died 1 April 1881 in Metcalf., Thomas Co., Ga. She was Baptised at Laurens Hill Baptist Church in Laurens Co., Ga. on 4 August 1848. She married William Knapp 17 February 1852 in Thomas Co., Ga. He was born 24 August 1824 in Wilmington., Hanover Co., N. C. and died 27 October 1878 in Thomas Co., Ga. Both are buried at the Horne Cemetery near Metcalf., Thomas County., Ga. They had five (5) children. 2. Mary A. J. Forrest was born 27 December 1832 in Laurens Co., Ga. and died 17 November 1869. She was also Baptised at Laurens Hill Baptist in Laurens Co., Ga. on 4 August 1848. She married Daniel Emory Stringer 21 February 1858 in Thomas Co., Ga. son of Daniel Stringer and Mariah Higdon. He was born 6 January 1828 and died17 November 1864 in S.C. He was a private Company C., 57th Georgia Infantry & later Company C, 28th Bn. Ga. Artillery, C.S.A. Severely wounded at John’s & James Island, S.C. 1 July to 10 July 1864. They had two (2) children. Compiler Notes: It was stated by family members that Mary went to S.C. to nurse her huband. She had followed him to South Carolina through her nursing activities with the Confederates. Her fate and that of an infant daughter are not known with certainty, but it is believed to be similar to that of her husband. 3. Daniel Thomas Forrest was born 31 August 1844 in Laurens Co., Ga., and died 15 November 1900 in Boston., Thomas Co., Ga. He married Susan F. Hutto 18 December 1867 in Leon Co., Fla. She was born 6 August 1843 and died 24 June 1923 in Thomas Co., Ga. Daniel was a private, Capt. Gambles’s Company, Florida Light Artillery, Confederate States Army. Later transferred to Capt Villepigue’s Company, Kilcrease Light Artillery as Jr. Lieutenant. Paroled at Tallahassee, Fla. 13 May 1865. Daniel and Susan were both buried at Boston Cemetery., Boston., Thomas Co., Ga. They had nine (9) known children. Most of which are also buried at the Boston Cemetery., Thomas County., Georgia. 4. Martha Jane Forrest was born 11 August 1846 in Laurens Co., Ga. and died 2 March 1901 in Thomas Co., Ga. She married Thomas Jefferson Horne 21 February 1867 in Thomas Co., Ga. He was born 14 April 1846 and died 16 July 1895 in Thomas County., Ga. Both are buried in the Horne Cemetery near Metcalf., Thomas Co., Ga. They had Ten (10) known children. Sugar second Elizabeth McMillan Hurst 26 January 1861 in Jefferson Co., Fla., daughter of Archibald McMillan and Chloe (?). She died 14 April 1879 in Jefferson Co., Fla. It was after her death Sugar moved back to near Metcalf in Thomas Co., Ga. He died 13 November 1885 near Mertcalf., Thomas Co., and was buried on land he donated which became the Horne Cemetery. He had selected his burial plot and it is thought Annie Montgomery is buried next to him in a unmarked grave. We have been told Elizabeth McMillan Hurst is buried with her Hurst Family.
