The gently-winding river covers holes which can suddenly drop a swimmer over his head; has large roots which tangle, grab and hold; and offers an abundant supply of poisonous snakes. Also, it seems the river can, on occasion, conjure up a powerful portion of bad luck which it passes on with no conscience whatsoever. Rising or falling, the river never seems to be the same! THE RIVER'S LATEST VICTIM is an Ochlochnee man who narrowly averted disaster Sunday. James E. Carter, 20, of Rt. 2, Ochlochnee, was swimming near Root Bridge when he misjudged the water's depth during a dive and hit his head on the bottom. His brothers, Ramey Carter, 21 and Charles Carter, 19, quickly spotted the trouble and pulled him ashore. Carter was conscious at first, then passed out for approximately 15 minutes. He was bleeding from the nose and mouth, and was rushed to the Archbold Memorial Hospital. He was released today. A 17- year -old Thomasville youth, Frank Edward Bailey, Jr., was drowned in the river while swimming with his family the previous Sunday.
