Speed Jr., 72, of (address deleted for privacy), Boston, are at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2003, at Hadley's Funeral Home in Thomasville. The Rev. Estelle Arrington will officiate, with burial at Browning Cemetery in Metcalf. Active pallbearers are Wesley McCaskill, Jerry McCaskill, Freddie McCaskill, Danny Haggins, Isaiah Reddick and Rashad Scott. Mr. Speed died on Tuesday, July 29, 2003, at his home. Born on Aug. 22, 1930, in Wichita, Kan., he was son of the late James J. Speed Sr. and Lubertha Speed. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Marie Mitchell. He moved to Boston in 1995 after having lived in California and was a retired automobile mechanic technician. He served in the U.S. Army. Survivors include two sons, Richard Speed of LaHabra, Calif., and Shawn Speed of Federal Way, Wash.; three sisters, Julia Lee of Lancaster, Calif., Ozie (John) Dudley of Los Angeles and Arzella Collins of Lancaster; and a host of other relatives and friends in Thomasville and Metcalf.
