Mildred Jackson Vann
Services for Mildred Jackson Vann, Thomasville, are at 5 p.m. Saturday, May 17, 
2003, at First Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dan Spencer officiating. Mrs. Vann 
died Wednesday, May 14, 2003, at Camellia Gardens Nursing Home. She was born in 
Macon, where she attended Miller High School. She attended Wesleyan College and 
the University of Georgia where she earned an AB degree in 1936. She earned a 
second degree from the University of Georgia, a bachelor of science in home 
economics in 1938. Mildred Vann married Thomas Heyward Vann of Thomasville in 
1938. Their early married life in Thomasville was interrupted by the bombing of 
Pearl Harbor and the immediate enlistment of Mr. Vann in the armed services. 
During World War II, the couple lived in El Paso, Texas, where Capt. Vann 
served as Base Intelligence Officer for the Army Air Corps at Biggs Field. 
While there, Mildred Vann took an active part in the Red Cross, the Woman's 
Club and her first child, Tommy, was born. After VE Day, Capt. Vann attended 
Judge Advocate General school at the University of Michigan, and the couple 
resided in Atlanta, where Capt. Vann served as JAG officer for the 4th Army 
Service Command until the spring of 1946. The couple then returned to 
Thomasville, where Mr. Vann resumed his law practice, and Mildred Vann became 
active in community affairs and her second child, Andy Vann, was born. In 1952 
and 1953, Mildred Vann served as president of the Junior Service League. In 
1959 and 1960, she served as president of the Parents Teachers Association in 
the Thomasville public school system. From 1960 through 1970, she served as 
state recommendations chairman for Tri Delta Sorority, and from 1964 through 
1970, she was a director of the YMCA. From 1966 through 1968, she served as 
president of Briarcliff Garden Club, and from 1968 through 1970, she served as 
president of The Garden Club Inc. In April 2003, she was honored as a founding 
member of Briarcliff Garden Club. From 1972 through 1974, she served as 
director of the Women's Missionary Union of First Baptist Church, and from 1974 
through 1976, she served as president of the Thomasville Woman's Club. In 1977 
through 1981, she served as Regent of the Thomasville Chapter of the Daughters 
of the American Revolution, and in 1980, she joined the John Howell Chapter of 
the Colonial Dames of the Seventeenth Century and also served as president of 
that organization. Mildred Vann was active in her local bridge club and played 
bridge every week with her club for more than 60 years. She and her husband 
also played a weekly game of bridge with Red and Evie Milton for more than 50 
years. She attributed her alert mind and excellent memory in her years of 
declining health to her years of playing bridge. Mildred Vann is survived by 
two sons, Thomas H. Vann Jr., and John Andrew Jackson Vann. She is survived by 
three grandchildren, Christopher Heyward Vann, Kathryn Lyn Vann and John Andrew 
Vann. The family will receive friends at from 6 to 8 p.m. today. Visitors may
