Regarding deaths of Melville Hanna, J.C. McAllister and Grover C. Norwood Daily Times Enterprise February 17, 1922 Hanna Estate Pays Big Sum To State Atlanta, Feb 17 - Attorney for the estate of H. Melville Hanna of Thomas county, to-day made pay- ment to the state of Georgia $28, 559.64 inheritance taxes under the laws of this state. Returns of this amount less the fee to the ordinary and tax collector of Thomas county, were made to-day to the controller general accompanied by a net check of $27,963.75. Appraisal was made on the estate last July, but at that time there was a difference of opinion as to whether or not the intangible values were subject to inheritance tax in this state, representatives of this state taking the position that they are. The matter was carried over for some months and finally attorneys for the Hanna estate accepted the state's position and have now included the intangibles. Last summer Special Agent J. F. Roberts, after working on the ques- tion of citizenship involved, effected a settlement for ad valorem taxes on the invisible values of the Hanna properties amounting to $65,000 as the state's share in addition to which a large amount was collected for Thomas county. This was but one of the several large property holding in that county on which the special investigator has been working and it is learned, there is still involved the matter of unpaid and unreturned ad valorem taxes on the properties of Mrs. Kate Ireland, daughter of Neil Hanna, and her two children, to each whom the late Mr. Hanna turned over large holdings when he made a division of his pro- perties and for which he created a trusteeship. Still another side of the same es- tate involves the properties of Mrs. Coburn Haskell, another daughter of Mr. Hanna, who with her four chil- dren, also shared equally with her children, in the matter of the Hanna division. Mr. Haskell also is said to be possessed of particularly large holdings of invisible property values, accumulated from investments made out of the proceeds of some several hundred dollars a day royalties over a period of about twenty years on a certain golf ball he developed, these latter properties are in dispute at this time on the claim for ad valorem taxes. - - - - - - - - KILLING IN COLQUITT COUNTY Moultrie, Ga., Feb 17 - J. C. Mc Al- lister was shot and killed last night by W. S. Simpson in front of the Simpson home at Simpson Crossing, 18 miles east of Moultrie. The men had quarreled late in the day. McAllister, armed with a rifle is said to have gone to Simpson's home to renew the trouble. Both men are widely known. - - - - - - - - IN MEMORY OF GROVER CLEVELAND NORWOOD WHEREAS, On the third day of January, 1922, Sovereign Grover Cleve- land Norwood was suddenly taken from our midst, while in the full vigor of manhood by the Supreme Com- mander of the Universe, and WHEREAS, His death has removed from among us one whom we had learned to love and admire from his youth, because of his manly and up- right qualities, and for his genial friendship and trustworthiness, and WHEREAS, In the passing Sov- erign Norwood, Tourist City Camp, Woodmen of the World, has lost one of its most beloved and honored mem- bers, and a good and true friend to all Woodmen and one who was at all times ready and willing to give a helping hand to those in need of life's comforts, and gladly would he have shared their burdens, there BE IT RESLOVED, That in the loss of Soverign Norwood, we have in a spirit of humility given him to the care of the one great Command to that Greatest of all so we commend him; and RESOLVED FUTHER, To extend to the bereaved family of the deceased brother and Soverign, heartfelt sympathy, assuring that their loss is also ours.
