He was born at the family home in Burke County, North Carolina. His family had come to North Carolina from Virginia some twenty odd years before. Nothing is known about his early life but he must have received at least a rudimentary education as he was able to read and write. In about 1819 he married Miss Elizabeth Sherrill, his cousin on the Durham side of the family. Elizabeth, who was born in October of 1799, was the daughter of Isaac and Mabel Durham Sherrill. It was at their home in Burke county that their oldest child, Priscilla, was born in 1820. She was followed by Jason Carson, in 1822, William Rufus, in 1823, Isaac Nelson, in 1825, Morgan, in 1828, Mary Elizabeth, in 1829, Warren F., in 1832, Hugh Hamilton, in 1834, Anna H., in 1836, Hawkins Judson, in 1838, Elisa J., in 1841, and Nancy Josephine, in 1848. Sometime in the 1830's Bailey and Elizabeth moved to Macon County, North Carolina. It was here that most of their older children were married. In about 1849 they moved, once again, to Rabun County, Georgia. It was there, on January 22, 1852, that he was licenced to practice medicine by the state of Georgia. He must have already been licenced by North Carolina as he gave in occupation in 1850 as Doctor. Dr. Kirby was also an ordained minister and performed quite a few wedding ceremonies including that of his grandson, Wellington Bryson, in 1874. By 1870 they had moved to the Brasstown area of Towns County, Georgia, to be nearer to their daughter, Priscilla, who had married Ewell Bryson in 1838. Dr. Kirby lived in Towns County until his death on January 7, 1876. Elizabeth Kirby outlived her husband by only a few years dying on October 5, 1876. They are both buried at Old Union Baptist Church Cemetery in Towns County, Georgia.
