Father a Revolutionary War veteran. Birth: in Nash county, North Carolina. Reportedly removed from Nash county, North Carolina to Warren county, Georgia then to Newborn, Newton county, Georgia to La Grange, Troup county, Georgia. Census: 1820 Capt Jesse Ivys District, Warren county, Georgia with bride & one slave. Within History of Troup County publication was found the following four items: 1)- La Grange Female College was chartered 26 December 1831, first such female insitution in Georgia with Rufus Broome setting as one of seven members of Board of Trustees. (Chapter XVII) 2)- 1829-30 court house was built center of the square and business establishments were on the four sides of square, including Rufus Broome. (p, 49) 3)- Inferior Court of Troup County: 5 March 1828 had land surveyed. 16 November 1830, while the property may have been bought some time prior to the date of the deeds, the first recorded deed given by the Inferior Court was to Rufus Broome, for a portion of the block on south side of Court Square. (p, 50) 4)- Creek War of 1836: Rufus Broome is noted gathering town's remaining women and children into the court house and strongly barricaded it, resolving to protect them or die. (p, 68) Census: 1840 District 656, Troup county, Georgia with wife, eight kids & six slaves, home at what now is Broome & Main streets. (town also has a street named Guinn) Census: 1850, age 64 La Grange, Troup county, Georgia with wife & six kids in household of a Richrd W Allen (possibly his son-in-law). At least two sons served the Cofederacy during Civil War; 8th of eight known children; Broome, James A. ~ D-14 Ala.; lost leg at Wilderness, Va., May 5, 1864. 3rd of eight known children; Broome, John R. ~ K-13 Ga.; Jan. 20, 1864; disabled Feb. 28, 1865. Also son-in-law, John C Guinn, served as a Confederate officer. Death: in La Grange, Troup county, Georgia. Father: Burrell Broome b: 1754 North Carolina. Mother: Martha Flewellan b: North Carolina.
