Bunk reportedly changed his name from Sterling to Hilliard when the slaves were freed. Mary's name was Mary Tatum, but on a 1874 Texas delayed birth record of one of her children (Delia) , she is listed as Mary Taylor Hilliard. I think that the Taylor is an error and may be a spelling from hearing the Georgian drawl of Tatum. They moved from Georgia around 1866 or so and headed for Texas. They had at least two children (Asa (b. 1863) and James (b. 1866?) ) when they left Troup County. Asa, my great grandfather was their oldest and he was born in Georgia. He is mistakenly listed as (Acy) on the 1870 census in (Gonzales) Texas. A woman from GA named Hettie Hilliard, who may have been Mary's twin sister, was living in Texas with them in 1870. We always thought that Hettie was a child of Bunk & Mary, but the census lists her as being the same age as Mary. The age could have been an error, but notes next to the name list her as a twin. Now, I'm wondering if she could have been a 2nd wife to Bunk. Bunk and Mary and their older children are in the 1870 census in Texas. Mary was about 24 yrs in 1870 and Bunk was about 40 according to the census. This is a work in progress, and we hope to discover more information.
