The direct bloodline is as follows: Mary Frances Gauntt I Mamie Hobbs I Amaryllis Smith Deaton I Amber Dawn Deaton I Alexander Deaton Haas & Zachary Deaton Haas PREFACE: Our ancestor, Peter Gaunt, landed in Sandwich, MA, in 1637 and may have been the earliest Gaunt to arrive in the New World. He had journeyed to America from Lincolnshire, England. He may have been the son of a certain Thomas Gaunt and Susan Bate. If so, then our Gauntt family were truly early American pioneers. There are, however, records to indicate that a Richard Gaunt was in Isle of Wight County, VA, as early as 2-14-1637. Another record has this Richard Gaunt living in James City, VA, in 1637. It does seem certain that one of these early settlers was the original Gauntt to settle in America. It should be noted that many Gauntts, Gants, Gaunts, Gantts, served in the Revolutionary War. An examination of the DAR records will reveal much information concerning these "Gauntts." MEANING OF THE SURNAME "GAUNTT": The surname of "de Gant" or "Gaunt" originated from the old name of the present "Ghent" in Flanders. One line of "Gants" has now been traced for twenty-four generations from Samuel Gant who died in Baltimore, MD, to a Baldwin VI of Flanders; but his would not appear to be our family line. Franders was part of Northern Europe and bordered on the North Sea until more recent times. What was Flanders then is now Northern Belgium, the southern tip of Netherlands, and the "Le Lord" section of France. The city of Ghent (Gent) with a population of 160,000 in Belgium was originally in Flanders. The "Treaty of Ghent" ended the War of 1812 between the United States and Great Britain (signed 12-24-1814). The name means "...slim, slender, haggard looking, tall, angular...glove maker, one who made and sold gloves..one who came from Ghent in Belgium." The name and its various spellings has been found to be in use as early as 1219 A.D. There is ancient oral family history to suggest that the ancestors of our Peter Gaunt were induced to come to England from Ghent, the capital of Flanders, by the English monarchy because "skilled craftsmen" were needed to help modernize the kingdom. There is another story suggesting that Peter Gaunt was a descendant of royalty from Ghent. Supposedly the descendants of the first Gilbert de Gant were residents and rulers of Lincolnshire, England. It is likely that this Gilbert de Gant is the source of the name Gaunt (Gauntt) in England. Supposedly he came to Lincolnshire before 10-14-1066 A.D., the date of the Battle of Hastings. It is alleged that he was sent to England by the King in advance of the invasion for the purpose of insuring the success of the invasion. At any rate, our Gaunt ancestors migrated from Flanders to England to Sandwich, Massachusetts, very early in the history of America. They would not be the first ancestors of Alexander Deaton Haas and Zachary Deaton Haas to reach the New world (John Billington on the Mayflower was probably the first) but they would appear to be a close "second." GENERATION FIVE: MARY FRANCES GAUNTT: Mary Frances "Fanny" Gauntt (MFG) is the maternal great, great, grandmother of Alexander Deaton Haas & Zachary Deaton Haas and was the eighteenth child of at least twenty-two children of Elisha Luther Gauntt. She was the eight child of her mother, Sophia Mitchum. "Fanny" was born 12-21-1890 in Randolph Co., AL. She first married Grover Cleveland Hobbs on 4-14-1908 At West Point, Troup Co., GA. The ceremony was performed by W.R. Lord, Justice of the Peace. She 2nd married Fletcher Waters about 1970. Fletcher was the widower of MFG's deceased sister, Minnie Gauntt Waters ("Mittie Bell"). Fanny died in Lanett, AL, in 1982. MFG had the distinction of being a member of the "fifty year club" of the West Point Manufacturing Company." She worked a half a century in the Langdale and Lanett, AL, cotton mills. She began working in these mills at the age of twelve and retired on the same job (her only job) at the age of sixty-two. She was absent from work only to give birth to her children. Even though essentially a person of the twentieth century, Fannie never learned to read or write, nor drive an automobile, nor sew, nor garden, nor to engage in "hobbies." In modern language, she was a "workaholic." She spent all the years of her life working in the cotton mill and caring for her crippled husband. Her family and acquaintances consider her an exceedingly kind person and not at all given to passing judgment on others. Her first husband, Grover Hobbs, was born 2-17-1884 in Clay Co., AL, and spent much of his adult life in a wheel chair. He died 3-9-1949 in Chambers Co., AL. VIGNETTE: Some Impressions of Fanny Gauntt Hobbs as seen by her granddaughter Amaryllis Smith Deaton (11-22-1979): "In 1979, Fanny was approaching her 89th year of life and would celebrate her birthday on 12-21-79. When I interviewed her on 11-22-79, she seemed healthy enough for a lady her age. She had no serious health problems such as heart trouble, or cancer. However, she did have arthritis in her legs and had problems walking about. Her leg (knee area) was swollen and the doctors were talking of 'drawing water off her knee.' Granny's mind was fairly alert but did show some signs of senility. She could recall events but had some difficulty remembering and had to be given time to think. She was easily distracted. It has been my impression that through the years she had always been a kind and easy going person. I have never seen or heard her raise her voice in anger. My father, who felt quite uncomfortable with the Hobbs family, has no unkind remarks to make about MFG. She was employed by the West Point Manufacturing Company for fifty years and retired as a member of the 'fifty year club.' Since my grandfather, Grover Hobbs, was an invalid, she was the sole wage earner in the family for many years. My mother, Mamie Hobbs Smith, would always take my sister 'Becky' and myself to visit Grandma and Grandpa on Sunday afternoons when we were growing up. We would raid the refrigerator for good things to eat and especially 'dopes' (cold drinks) and butter. I would always eat chunks of creamy butter (not oleomargarine) while at their home. On Saturday nights the adults would always listens to the 'Grand Ole Opry' from Nashville, TN, while 'Becky' and I played with our toys or plundered through the dresser drawers. It was always fun to visit my grandparents because they were not strict with us. At Christmas, when 'Becky' and I were to old for toys, our grandparents always gave us socks and panties and a little money on the side. I guess we got this same gift for five or six years. It never varied. The memories of my grandmother, Fanny Gauntt Hobbs Waters are very pleasant. She was always very kind to me." CHILDREN OF MARY FRANCES GAUNTT HOBBS: I. Mamie Hobbs who is the great grandmother of Alexander Deaton Haas & Zachary Deaton Haas. See the Hobbs Family. II. Ida Arizona Hobbs was born 6-1911 in Langdale, Chambers Co., AL. She married Thomas "Bill" Stevens and died 6-3-1995 in the George Lanier Hospital in Lanett, Chambers Co., AL. She had worked about ten years in the local cotton mill. "Bill & Ida" had no children. III. Ethredge Geoffrey Hobbs was born 11-15-1915 in Langdale, Chambers Co., AL. He married Gladys Yarbough ca 1935. "Ethridge" served in WWII, suffered from what is now known as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and eventually was awarded Social Security Disability benefits on the basis of PTSD & related problems. CHILDREN OF ETHRIDGE GEOFFREY HOBBS: A. Gerald Hobbs who died in infancy. B. Frances Laverne Hobbs who was born ca 1941. She married Phillip Hammock and had several children. C. Ella Gail Hobbs was born ca 1948. She married four times and had two children. Children of Ella Gail Hobbs: 1. David born ca 1966. David became a policeman in Chambers Co., AL. Eventually he moved to Gulf Shores, AL, and continued to work as a policeman. Because "Bill & Ida" Stevens had no children, David accepted responsibility for caring for them in the later years. 2. Brandy was born ca 1970 and died ca 1998. GENERATION SIX: ELISHA LUTHER GAUNTT: Elisha Luther Gauntt (ELG), the grandfather of Mamie Hobbs Smith, was born 3-27-1833 in SC. He was the 2nd son and 2nd child of nine children of John Gauntt and Winnefred Williams. Winnefred was born ca 1806 in SC, and died between 6-20-1880 & 8-1881. Elisha had first married Susan Burgess (Birgis?) on 9-15-1853 and had 2nd married Sophia Mitchum (Meachum?) on 8-8-1881. He died 9-25-1905 and is buried at Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery, Chambers Co., AL. This cemetery is located near "Five Points." Susan, the daughter of John Burgess and "Anna" was born 6-17-1832 in GA, and died 4-18-1881 in Chambers Co., AL. Sophia, the daughter of James Shadrack "Shade" Mitchum and Sarah Britt, was born 3-20-1857 and died 1-10-1913 in Chambers Co., AL. John Burgess was born in 1796 in GA, and died 3-3-1862. "Anna" was born ca 1805 in GA, and died 4-16-1858. John and family were in Gwinnitt Co., GA, in the 1820 & 1830 census and were in Randolph Co., AL, in 1850. Sophia Mitchum, age 13, appears in the 1870 census of Chambers Co., AL. She is living with her parents James "Shadrack" Mitchum, her mother "Sarah," her siblings, and her grandmother Liza Mitchum. They are living in HH 34 in Lafayette, AL. Her father is recorded as a "farm hand" and owns real estate valued at $150. His personal property is valued at $60. Liza Mitchum owns real estate valued at $200. Elisha Gauntt was reported to be a farmer, a dentist, and a veterinarian. He was brought to Alabama by his father about 1843 and was residing in Randolph Co., AL, in 1860, 1870 & 1880. In 1880 he is living in HH 337. In HH 338 is Winnie Gauntt Elisha's mother) and in HH 339 is a certain Calvin Gauntt who as of the year 2000 was unidentified. In 1870 he is living in HH 816 and is identified as a farmer. His real estate is valued at $700 and his personal property at $350. Fortunately for his posterity, and future genealogists, ELG recognized the value of records and ,thus, kept a journal in which he recorded names, dates, business transactions, etc. This journal, now over a hundred years old, the pages yellow and brittle, was in the possession of his grandson, Ethridge Geoffrey Hobbs, who, on 11-23-1979, allowed Amaryllis Smith Deaton and LDD to examine the same. In addition to listing the names of his children, their dates of birth, and, in some cases, death, dates of marriage, etc., it also contains the records of some of his business transactions. For example, ELG records, "Against Doctor Davis 1874, credit by cash of $10.00_______wheat 2 and one-half, $1.75, hulling______." Another notation reads, "Interest on note of E.E. Gauntt $143.91, Nov. 15." And again, "Winney Gauntt, 3 bushels of corn $1.25 X 3 = $3.75." Many of the notations are now illegible but it does seem clear that ELG was a successful businessman and someone the community looked to for leadership and financial assistance. He is buried in the Baptist Church Cemetery in Chambers Co., AL, located near "Five Points." Winnifred was born ca 1806 in SC. Absolute proof is lacking to establish that John is the son of Joseph Gauntt of early Newberry District, SC, but all evidence strongly supports this conclusion, with no evidence to the contrary. John and family migrated from SC, to Randolph Co., Al, ca 1843. After John's death Winnefred remained in Randolph Co. All of the older Gauntts were blond, blue eyed, pink skinned, and showed Irish blood. The oldest spelling of Gauntt was 'Ghent' and was Americanized to Gant, Gantt, Gaunt, Gent...but I dare say all came for the English Ghent. Ira Ellis Gauntt, b. 12-21-1907 in Mt. Calm, Tx, my husband, remembers his grandfather, Joseph Carey Gauntt. We have pictures of him and his son, John Thomas Gauntt, my husband's father. Joseph Carey is buried in old Mt. Calm Cemetery, six miles from Hubbard. Joseph Carey's wife, Cynthia Louise Annice Arnett, is buried next to him. They had twenty-two children...several sets of twins...only nine lived to reach adulthood. These are their children...I personally knew Aunts Mae, Ella, Lena, Uncle Henry and John. They are all dead now. I know their families. They had large families except for Aunt Ella who only had one daughter, who lives in Waco, TX, and teaches at Baylor College. When my father-in-law told me he had twenty-two children, I did not believe him. Can you imagine a woman having twenty-two children and out living her husband? That is incredible! I have pictures of their headstones. My father-in-law, John Thomas Gauntt, was born in Roanoke, Ala. Joseph Carey moved his family to Texas. Joseph Carey's father, John Gauntt, who married Winnefred Williams, was killed during the Civil War we have been told. John Gauntt was born 3-1-1801. I do not have a copy of his military papers...I am a Daughter of the American Revolution, and also a United Daughter of the Confederacy, and am eligible for Colonial Dame, but no local chapter...Joseph Carey Gauntt had a twin sister 'Lizzie' who I am sure was named Elizabeth. We have pictures of them...I would like to hear from you again. Mrs. Ira E. Gauntt" It may well be that the Gauntts are Irish, Scottish, and English, but all the recorded documentation of the name's origin indicates that the surname "Gauntt"(Ghent) was first found in use in Flanders. It should be noted that Myrtle Gauntt believes that John Gauntt died in the Civil War. He would have been fifty-one years of age when the war started. One record had him born as early as 1901. Samuel was farming. They were living in HH 46. Living in HH 45 is a certain Tony Gauntt, age 33. and his wife "Jane," age 19. They are African Americans and are farming. If the notation about Tony and Jane is correct, then they are a most unusual couple. In 1860, slaves were not recorded by name in the census. This would mean that Tony and Jane would have to be "free negroes" living in SC.....a most unusual circumstance. One must wonder if the notation "B" beside their names is a clerical error?? E. Hannah Gauntt was born ca 1846 in SC. F. Eula Gauntt was born ca 1848 in SC. G. Beersheba was born ca 1851 in SC. H. Joseph Gauntt was born ca 1852 in SC. "Carrey" and family appear in the 1850 census of Troup Co., Ga. He is living in HH 474. He is identified as a "wheelwright." CHILDREN OF CAREY GAUNTT' a. Levi N. (H?) Gauntt was born ca 1841 in AL, and married "May" who was born ca 1849 in GA. Levi was in Talbot Co., AL, in 1850. Levi was a private in Co. "G" of the 37th Regiment (CSA). He enlisted 3-19-1862 at Cusseta, AL. He was in the Battle of Missionary Ridge, Chattanooga, TX, was captured at Kennesaw Mt., GA, and remained a P.O.W. until the end of the war. He filed for a veteran's pension on 7-7-1913 in Chambers Co., AL. At that point he listed his personal worth as $150.00 (cash money) with no real estate. Appropriate affidavits were sworn to before J.J. Robinson, judge of probate court. Supporting Levi's claim as a witness was a B.G. Moore. At Chattanooga and Missionary Ridge the Confederate Army was under the command of General Braxton Bragg (1817-1876). Ft. Bragg, NC, is named for him. As the Chattanooga campaigns began Bragg had 76,000 men under his command. At the Battle of Chickamauga (9-19 &20-1863) he lost 17,000 men. The battle of Missionary Ridge occurred 11-25-1863, a battle won by the Union supposedly, without an order to "attack." "What happened at Missionary Ridge constitutes one of the most astounding happenings in the course of the whole war. As the 'impregnable Confederate center' unaccountably melted away under the assault of ...veteran infantrymen...Ralph J. Neal, a private in the 20th Tennessee Infantry, was one of those in the Confederate line receiving the brunt of...attack and his account of the action there helps give a clearer idea of just what happened and how it happened. He mentions the total eclipse of the moon the night before and says this had a depressing influence on the men, giving them a sense of impending disaster...'Anyhow,' he says, 'the gloom of the preceding night still hung over us the next morning as the Union troops moved into position...The 40th Georgia Battalion to the right, the 210th Tennessee next, and so on...It was indeed a grand spectacle for our little band to see...Perhaps in modern times an entire army had not witnessed such a scene. The valley between the Ridge and Chattanooga had been occupied by both armies for near two months and was now almost destitute; and across this denuded(?) valley Grant's army of from 80,000 to 100,000 were marching in plain view of every confederate soldier. We could plainly see every movement. When about half way across the valley our artillery opened up on them and they could not well reply. How we did enjoy cannonading...no shells were disturbing us. But on they came, and then reached the foot of the Ridge and our guns could not be depressed sufficiently to play on them any longer. And now our small arms were brought to bear on them as they climbed up the Ridge...As the enemy came up, everything in our front was driven back...so also in front of the Georgia Battalion, and to the north of this, as they came steadily on, never halting...the Yankees...rushed at the battery with fixed bayonets. The cannoneers fought them with their swab sticks, but they were soon overpowered and killed or captured with their guns...As we moved back our brigade continued to fire at the pursuing enemy...Colonel Shy discovered our field band in the rear and ordered them to play 'Dixie.' This seemed to do more toward rallying the men than all else." ) See "Tennessee's War," compiled and edited by Stanley F. Horn, Tennessee Civil War Centennial Commission, 1965, pp. 240-242), The Battle of Missionary Ridge cost the GAR 5,500 men and the CSA 2,500. The largest battle of the Atlanta Campaign was the Battle of Kennesaw Mt., fought 6-27-1864. General William Tecumseh Sherman (1820-1891) had 90,000 troops at this command. His opposite number was General Joseph E. Johnson who commanded 60,000 Southern troops. General Sherman describes the Battle of Kennesaw Mt." "Not a day, not an hour, not a minute was there a cessation of fire. Our skirmishers were in absolute contact, the lines of battle and the batteries but little in the rear of the skirmishers and thus matters continued until 6-27-1864, when I ordered a general assault with the full cooperation of my lieutenants, Thomas, McPherson, and Schofield, as good and true men as ever lived or died for their country's cause; but we failed, losing 3000 men to the Confederate loss of 630 (one record says 2000 & 270). Still the result was that within three days Johnson abandoned the strongest position possible and was in full retreat for the Chattahoochee River. We were on his heels; skirmished with his rear at Smyrna Church, on the 4th day of July, and saw him fairly across the Chattahoochee on the 10th, covered and protected by the best line of field entrenchments I have ever seen, prepared in advance. No officer or soldier will question the generalship of Joseph E. Johnson. His retreats were timely, in good order, and he left nothing behind"(see "Battles and Leaders of the Civil War, Vol.4," by Robert Underwood Johnson & Clarence Clough Biul, N.Y., Thomas Yoseloff, Inc, 1956, pp. 252-253). Guy (m) Gauntt was born ca 1879 in GA. B. Elizabeth Gauntt was born ca 1846 in AL. C. Leonus Gauntt was born ca 1846 in AL. D. Ninney(?) J. Gauntt was born ca 1850 in AL. GENERATION NINE: ISRAEL GAUNTT: Israel Gauntt was the youngest son and fifth child of Zebulon Gauntt and Sophia Shrouds. He is the great, great grandfather of MFG. He was born ca 1725 (perhaps even earlier) in Springfield Township, Burlington County, NJ, and married the widow Hannah Ennis nee Spencer. Hannah had been married before and had a daughter named "Susannah." Israel died 5-1800. Israel is said to be the progenitor of the Newberry District, SC, Gauntts. There were several Gauntt families in early SC. Some of them spelled their surname "Gaunt." The early Gauntts (besides Israel) were Alemon born 1754-1774, Cador born 1745-1865, and Tyre born before 1765. Israel, Nebo, and Zebulon Gauntt were in South Carolina by 1766-1776. Esther Gauntt was witness to the LWT of Robert Milhouse of Camden, SC, on 5-19-1769. In 1800, James, Joseph, and Samuel K. Gauntt were all recorded in Newberry District. Israel Gauntt served on grand juries and appears in the Newberry District Court Minutes between 1766-1775. Israel is mentioned in the LWT of Samuel Chapman dated 5-16-1791. Finally, there was a Zimuri and Zimri Gauntt in Newberry District in the late seventeen hundreds. Undoubtedly, these Gauntts were related and surely they were "Quakers" like their forefathers. Israel died in SC, in 1801. It would appear that Israel and his brother, Zebulon, left New Jersey ca 1753 with their destination being North Carolina. He and his brother were received into the Cane Creek Quaker Church, Orange Co., on 9-3-1753. After Israel married Hannah Ennis, he was disowned by the Quakers for "marrying out of unity." This was done 7-29-1758. Israel moved to South Carolina ca 1758. Israel's wife, Hannah, died 10-1815. It is believed that Israel served in the Revolutionary War and by occupation was a farmer and blacksmith. CHILDREN OF ISRAEL GAUNTT: I. Hannah Gauntt was born 1762-1766 and died 2-18-1816. She married Joseph Mooney. Hannah appears in the "Women of the Revolution," by Mrs. E.F. Ellet, Vol. 2, p. 298. "A man named Hubbs, who had served with the bloody tory and renegade Cunningham in South Carolina, was an 'out-lier' during the war. At one time he proposed, with two confederates, to rob an old man of Quaker habits-Israel Gauntt-who was reputed to be in possession of money. The three rode up one evening to the house and asked lodging which was refused. Hubbs rode to the kitchen door, in which Mrs. Gauntt was standing, and asked for water. He sprang in while she turned to get the water, and as she handed it to him she saw his arms. Her husband, informed of this, secured the doors. Hubbs presented his pistol at him; but his deadly purpose was frustrated by the old man's daughter, Hannah. She threw up the weapon and, being of manly proportions and strength, grappled with and threw him on the floor, where she held him, though wounded by his spurs, till he was disabled by her father's blows. Gauntt was wounded through the window by Hubbs' companions, and another ball grazed his heroic daughter just above the eye, but both escaped without further injury. Hannah afterwards married a man named Mooney. The gentleman, Judge O'Neall, who relates the foregoing incident has often seen her, and describes her as one of the kind and most benevolent of women. She died about the age of fifty, and her grandson, worthy and excellent man, is now living in the village of Newberry." That grandson was Joseph Mooney. II. Jacob Middleton Gauntt was born ca 1764 and died 11-1835. Jacob 1st married Hannah Holmes of Salem Co., SC, and 2nd married Mary Eckels ca 1827. Mary was born ca 1801 and died after 1850. Jacob and Hannah are mentioned in the LWT of Hannah's father, John Holmes, dated 10-11-1798. CHILDREN OF JACOB MIDDLETON GAUNTT: A. Mark Gauntt was born 2-5-1795 in SC. He died 7-1-1857 in TN. He married "Esther. W.," who was born 9-2-1812 and died 12-12-1868. Children of Mark Gauntt: 1. Eliza A. Gauntt was born 8-24-1837 in TN, and died 2-15-1854. 2. Harriet L. Gauntt was born 5-27-1840 in TN. She married John A. Ross (b. 1843, d. 1908). This family appears in the 1900 census of Greene Co., TN. 3. James B. Gauntt was born 7-16-1842 and died 3-21-1921. James served in the 12th Georgia Infantry and the 1st Tennessee Cavalry from 1862-1865 when he was disabled by injuries. 4. Francis Marion Gauntt (m) was born 7-9-1844 and died 6-8-1870. 5. Josephine O. Gauntt was born 10-26-1846 and died 4-15-1900. She married a Mr. Hunter. 6. Hannah M. Gauntt was born 3-26-1849 and died 1-23-1880. She also married a Mr. Hunter. 7. Sophia Gauntt was born 4-13-1851 and married Calvin L. Beals. 8. Emma M. Gauntt was born 2-24-1853 and died 2-17-1856. 9. Julia M. Gauntt was born 8-6-7-1856 and died 2-23-1882. B. Luke Gauntt was born ca 1800 in Newberry, SC, and died in Texas between 1860 & 1870. He married Sallie "Sibbie" Elizabeth Moore ca 1829. Luke moved to Georgia about 1830 and to Texas about 1850. Elizabeth was born ca 1806 and died 7-1879 in Texas. Luke purchased 320 acres of land in 1861 located four miles northeast of LaRue on Fincastle Road (Henderson Co.). Luke raised cattle, cotton, corn, and various grains. His son, John Washington, continued farming the land and purchased an additional fifty acres. The property remained in the family for four generations. This is the line of Trudie Gauntt of LaRue, TX. On 6-18-1979, LDD received the following letter from Trudie. Dear Mr. Deaton: How pleased I was to hear from you. I have been researching the Gauntts for several years and there are not many others doing so. I am concentrating on my husband's family since my mother and grandmother are active on my side. I have enclosed an ancestral chart on both of us. On the back of Curtis' chart I have taken his line back as far as I know. The info from Israel back was from Quaker records and an article in the National Genealogical Society Quarterly, Dec., 1974. If you cannot find a copy, I can xerox you a copy of mine for forty cents. Also may I suggest Quaker records on any allied lines but I do not have some on Joseph's family. This was from a James Gillis Gauntt of Chattanooga, Tn., 1966. It was written to a cousin of ours in Palestine, Tx. James Gillis Gauntt of Tn., and Robert Gauntt of Andalusia, Ala., had compiled a chart and the following is a copy....I have not done any research in Alabama. Our line from South Carolina with Luke continues in Walton Co., Ga., in 1830 and 1840 and to Gordon Co., Ga., in 1850. Then to Henderson Co., Tx., by 1852. Family tradition says they were in a wagon train that left Randolph Co., Ala, after 11-23-1850. There was a group that formed the Pilgrim's Rest Church (Primitive Baptist) from the Shiloh Church to "remove to the West." They arrived in Henderson Co., Tx., and the minutes record them meeting 10-16-1851. However, there is no mention of Gauntts in the church minutes. The original names were Owen, Stephens, Daniel, and Brown. Whether there were others who traveled with this same train but were not associated with this church is unknown to me. But one of Luke Gauntt's sons, married one of the Owen daughters after they got to Texas. I was encouraged that your people were from Clay and Chambers Cos., Ala., as they border on Randolph Co. So perhaps they were some kin there. I am not familiar with the Ala., Cos., but they could have been part of the same county back then. I don't know if I have been any help to you or if I have just muddied the waters. But perhaps with these names you can at least have some leads. I hope you have good luck in the Archives. I don't take as much time as I would like for research. And with three kids still at home it is kinda hard. Our oldest son, Floyd, just married three weeks ago and will go to Texas A&M for his last two years on his English degree. Brenda is 19 in Junior College and working this summer. Paul is 11, a 6th grader, plays summer baseball, and helps me with the garden, etc. We live about 35 miles from Tyler. Let me know if you find anything in your research and let me now how I can help you more. Happy hunting, Trudie Gauntt Judging from Trudie's letter, other records, and from personal knowledge, it would appear that the Gauntts, Gantts, of the 1800's did not follow the Quaker faith. Children of Luke Gauntt: 1. John Washington Gauntt was born 12-12-1829 in SC, and died 1-18-1912 in TX. . He married Martha Moranza Owens on 1-11-1855.
