She was 78 years of age. The former Pearl White, she was the daughter of the late Dr. Greene M. and Sarah Akers White, prominent pioneer members of LaGrange and Troup County. Mrs. Barnes has always been an enthusiastic leader in the religious, educational, and social activities of her community. She taught a Sunday School class at Harmony Methodist Church for more than 35 years. Everyone who knew "Miss Pearl" felt the charm of her personality, listened to her wise counsel and enjoyed the sincere welcome of her home. She is survived by one sister, Miss Lillian White, of Abbottsford, three daughters, Mrs. E. C. Ward, Montgomery; Mrs. G. E. Cline and Mrs. Pearl Simmons of LaGrange, two sons, Cary W. Barnes of Columbus and Wightman Barnes of LaGrange. She has four grandsons, James McMichael, Staff Sgt. E. B. Ward, now stationed in Japan; Robert Simmons and Gilbert Cline, of LaGrange. Four granddaughters, Mrs. Edwin Howard, Auburn; Miss Jean Barnes, Emory University and Carolyn and Ellen Simmons of LaGrange. Three great- granddaughters Wanda and Connie Ward of Japan and Carol Howard of Auburn three great-grandsons, Mack and Jerry McMichael of Prattville and Eddie Howard of Auburn. She is survived also by several nieces and nephews.
