DOUBLE TRAGEDY IN WEST POINT LAST SATURDAY

In the presence of a large crowd assembled on the streets of West Point, Ga., 
last Saturday, which had been widely advertised as special trade day, Jesse 
Wyche of Shawmut, shot and instantly killed policeman Brit Spratling, the 
oldest man on the force.  The officer had offered to arrest Wyche for alleged 
misconduct when he was shot down by Wyche, who was said to have been 
drinking.  The latter was caught by the chief of police and E.B. Ballard, 
sales promotor.  Wyche was carried to jail in LaGrange.

Among the witnesses to the tragedy was Rev. A.C. Yeargan, well known Baptist 
minister, who resides at Lanett.  The shock of the affair caused Mr. Yeargan 
to fall, striking his head on the pavement. His death followed almost 
immediately. It is not known whether death was caused by the blow or resulted 
from apoplexy or heart failure.  The funeral for Mr. Yeargan occurred at 
Daviston on Monday. Several ministers took part in the services which were 
attended by a large company.  Messrs. W.A. Yeargan and J.D. O'Keefe were 
present from Roanoke.
