Troup Co. GA - OBIT: Freeman Shelnutt Submitted by Regina Barnes Freeman Shelnutt MR. FREEMAN SHELNUTT Mr. Freeman Shelnutt. age 63. of #804 Warren Road. NE. Rome. died Wednesday night at 11:37 at a local hospital. A native of Troup County, Georgia, Mr. Shelnutt was born on October 7, 1934, the son of the late John T. and Bessie Eley Shelnutt. Mr. Shelnutt was a 1951 graduate of Hogansville, GA High School, attended North Georgia College, and was a 1955 graduate of Berry College. Following graduation from Berry, Mr. Shelnutt taught at the Georgia School for the Deaf at Cave Spring for 6 years. For the following 26 years, Mr. Shelnutt taught in Language Arts at Armuchee High School, having retired in 1986 from the Floyd County Board of Education. Mr. Shelnutt was a member and Deacon of the New Armuchee Baptist Church, where he served as Secretary of the Sunday School Department, Church Treasurer,served as a member of the Finance Committee, was a member and Director of the JOY Club, and for several years served as a Sunday School Teacher. At the time of his death, Mr. Shelnutt was serving as President of the Armuchee Ruritan Club and was a member of the Retired Teachers Association. Mr. Shelnutt was married on April 3, 1955 to the former Louise Payne, who survives. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Louise P Shelnutt; 2 daughters and sons-in-law, Regina and Steven Barnes of Rome, and Kim and Tony Miller of Calhoun, GA; 5 grand-children, Bradley and Drew Barnes of Rome, Josh, Kierston and Gavin Miller of Calhoun, GA: a sister, Carolyn Watson of Hogansville, GA: 1 uncle, Kernel Shelnutt of Franklin, GA: and 1 aunt, Miss Connie Eley of Rome. Nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services for Mr. Shelnutt will be held Saturday morning at 11 o'clock at the New Armuchee Baptist Church with the Revs. Ed Holsomback, Tim Rice and Willard MacAIlaster officiating with interment to follow in the family Iot of the New Armuchee Baptist Church Cemetery. The body will be carried to the church on Saturday morning at 10 o'clock to remain until the funeral hour. The following will serve as active pallbearers: Morris Rice, Gene Blackwelder, Clentis Poole, Greg and Tray Tucker, James (Mike) Miller, Harry Howard and Ricky Mull. Members of the J.O.Y. Club, the Armuchee Ruritan Club and Deacons of New Armuchee Baptist Church are requested to serve as honorary pallbearers. Both active and honorary pallbearers are requested to meet at the church on Saturday morning by 10:40. The family will receive friends at the New Armuchee Baptist Church this (Friday) evening from 6 until 9 o'clock,and at other hours they will be at the residence, #804 Warren Road.
