Turner County Georgia Mary Henderson Cemetery File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by Sharon Marzonie" Table of Contents page: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ga/turner.htm Georgia Table of Contents: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ga/gafiles.htm -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- MARY HENDERSON CEMETERY This cemetery (surveyed Oct, 2001 by myself) is located on Peacock Road, which is about 3/4 miles northeast from intersection of GA 112 and I-75. It is on a dirt road owned and maintained by the County. Private farm property surrounds the cemetery on three sides. Manasseh Henderson and his wife, Mary Whiddon, 2nd generation descendents of the 3 original pioneer families to settle this area (Ashburn and the Newton Section) are buried there. My ancestors, the Boles', along with other "key" sur-family names such as, Bailey, Barbee, Haman, Nipper, Royal, Story, Taylor, and Ward, are also buried there. It is also interesting to note that 18 of the 44 graves found during this survey were identifiable as children. The cemetery is in poor condition due to lack of awareness, overgrown tree saplings, and damage from the fence being torn out on the east and north sides. Originally it had a wooden fence around it with a large wooden gate and gateposts marking the entrance. Many of the original main posts can be seen, identifying the old fence line. I was told at one time visitors could drive (horse and buggy) through the gate and park in the cemetery. This is impossible now due to the grading on Peacock Rd. and the rubbish piles pushed in front of the cemetery by the County. Someone put a chain-link fence topped with barbwire around it at one time. After awhile the overgrown trees and underbrush became so bad that they were encroaching on the adjacent fields, and the current owner (of the fields) took a backhoe to the east and north boundaries, tearing down both the original fence and metal fence, and sadly taking away pieces of the graves on one side. Most of the headstones in this cemetery are in desperate need of repair. They are pushed over; some are broken into two halves or into tiny pieces, some are covered with leaves and mulch, and some are missing. Some will never be found unless the cemetery grounds are completely raked up. During my survey, a hand-drawn sketch of the visible headstone locations was completed and is available upon request. The last cleanup was done about 20 years ago, prior to my coming to organize a clean up in Oct 2001 with my husband and cousins from Newnan. The cleanup was extensive but much more help is needed. Below is a list of the people buried there with notes. If there is an asterisk before the names, this denotes that the headstone was not found but is on the survey done in 1993 by Jessie H. Paulk. An earlier survey was also done in 1933, which has more information. Name Dates BAILEY, Infant daughter b/d 27 Jan 1886 D/o J.R. Bailey & A.B. Bailey Note: Headstone rotated 180 degrees.
