Chance states that she has been a resident of Georgia all of her life and was first married to Theophilus Sauls, Feb 1866 in Twiggs County. She has since remarried and her first husband died in 1886 in Pulaski County. They were residing together at the time and she is currently a widow. Sauls was enlisted in the 6th Georgia regiment as a Private and was present at their surrender at Greensboro, North Carolina in 1865. She states that he was not captured by the enemy at any time. She states that her first husband did not receive a pension; however, her second husband received a Disability Pension. Her Martha J. (X) Chance Mark W. C. Faulk, Twiggs County Witnesses as to Service of Husband and Marriage 16th June 1920, Bibb County C. (Christopher)C. Anderson states that he resides in Macon, Georgia and never knew the applicant. He states that Mrs. Chance was born and raised in Georgia and was married to Theo Sauls and William Chance. He knew Sauls and Chance from July 11, 1861 to their graves. William Chance died in Danville, Twiggs County, Ga. in 1919 and that they were living together at the time of his death. William Chance enlisted in Company I, 6th Ga. Regt on May 20, 1861. He was also in the same Company and Regiment and thay both served the whole war, 1861-1865. They surrendered at Greensboro, North Carolina, April 16, 1864. He was not present at the surrender because he was with Lee's Army by transfer from 6th Regt to Macon Light Artillery, Aug 1864. He states that William Chance was present at the surrender. He states that "Chance was a soldier and always at his post". Signs his name C.(Christopher) C. Anderson Ordinary's Certificate Twiggs County W. C. Faulk certifies that he knows Martha J. Chance and that she was a county resident as of 4th November 1908 and that he also knows C. C. Anderson, resident of Bibb County, who swears to the service of her husband, and that they are both truthful and honest.... W. C. Faulk, Twiggs County NOTE---THE 1910 CENSUS STATES THAT THEY WERE DIVORCED; HOWEVER, THIS DOCUMENT INDICATES THAT THEY WERE MARRIED AND LIVING TOGETHER AT THE TIME OF THE DEATH OF WILLIAM C. CHANCE.
