Chance collapsed during a City Council meeting Thursday night and died later that evening of a heart attack. City Hall was closed Friday to allow city employees time to deal with the shock of the mayor's death and make plans regarding the city's continued operation. City Attorney James Maddox was sitting next to Chance at the meeting when the 73-year-old Chance fell out of his chair and was taken to the Medical Center of Central Georgia. ''I was stunned. I was shocked, to say the least, by the whole thing.'' Maddox said. He described Chance as one of few remaining public officials ''who really care about their towns.'' ''The citizens of Danville have no idea how much they are going to miss him,'' he said. Maddox said Chance was the kind of mayor ''who repaired frozen pipes in the city on weekends when no one else would and at no cost to the city.'' Chance's son, Douglas, said his father had been involved in politics as long as he could remember. Chance had served on the Danville City Council before becoming mayor and also worked for the Danville Volunteer Fire Department. According to friends and family, Chance was a modest man who never let his status of being Danville's mayor affect the way he treated people. Chance's son, Douglas, said, ''To say he went quietly about his business is a good description.'' Thursday's Danville City Council meeting was a hearing on the suspension of Danville Police Chief Craig Nasworthy. Chance suspended Nasworthy on Oct. 23 based on charges Maddox would not release. ''They are serious, but they are of the nature that privacy laws will not allow us to discuss,'' Maddox said. The City Council will meet Tuesday to finalize plans for the city's operation and to discuss the date of a special election to elect a new mayor.
