Jim Carroll Obituary Below From The Macon Telegraph 7-3-1963 Front Page Trucker, Twiggs Legislator Killed DANVILLE---Twiggs County Rep. Homer L. Chance, helping push a stalled car ina pickup truck, was killed Tuesday, in a spectacular crash when his vehicle was rammed in the rear by a tractor-trailer truck. The truck driver, Earl Smith of Garden City, also died and three Warner Robins residents who were in the car were injured and hospitalized after it took about two hours to free them. Trooper P. M. Walker of the Dublin station of the Georgia State Patrol said the tractor-trailer landed on top of the Warner Robins car and carried it 412 feet before both crashed into a tree. Walker investigated the tragedy, along with trooper R. D. Killingsworth, also of the Dublin station, and Twiggs Sheriff W. Earl Hamrick. The accident occured one-tenth of a mile from Danville on US 80. Walker said there were no tire tracks to indicate Smith had applied brakes before he plowed into the rear of Rep. Chance's truck. Whether he did put on brakes and they didn't work or whether he didn't see the truck in time to try to stop probably won't ever be known, the trooper said. The driver was attempting to leap from the truck when the door he opened slammed against a tree, the impact killing him, Walker said. The Dublin trooper identified the injured, hospitalized at Laurens County Hospital in Dublin, as: Lemuel L. Denham, who suffered lacerations of the forehead and head injuries; Mrs. Gladys Merk, lacerated head and burs of the right arm; and the wife of the driver of the Warner Robins auto, Mrs. Frances Denham, bruises and a fractured pelvis. Mr. Chance was 67 and Mr. Smith 52. The Twiggs County representative was a prominent farmer and former merchant of Danville. He was a lifelong resident of Twiggs County and was the son of Henry Chance and Mrs. Lula Jane Sauls Chance. He was a deacon of the Mt. Zion Baptist Church of Danville, a member of the Masonic Lodge 185, Free And Accepted Masons, and a veteran of World War I. Chance had served previous terms in the Sate House of Representatives and also was former state senator from the 51st district, the old district composed of Twiggs, Bibb, and Houston counties. Survivors include his widow, the former Miss Minnie Griffin of Danville; a sister, Mrs. J. K. Carden of Danville; one brother, W. C. Chance, also of Danville; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services for Mr. Chance will be held at 3PM Thursday in the Jeffersonville Methodist Church with burial to be in the Jeffersonville Cemetery. Hart's Mortuary is in charge. The Rev. W. Paul Jones, the Rev. Ralph Foster, the Rev. Sam Waldron and the Rev. M. L. Moncrief will officiate. Pallbearers include W. J. Chance, H. F. Helton, J. F. (Doc) Little, George Blunt, M. V. Holiday and William J. Chance. It was the fourth multiple death highway tragedy in Middle Georgia in the past three months and the second in Twiggs County in about a month.
