Mr. A.S. Griffin Killed by J.D. Johnson

Last Tuesday night near the home of Mr. J.D. Johnson, of West Lake, Mrs. A.S.
Griffin was fired on and instantly killed by Johnson, he using a double barrel
shot gun loaded with buck-shot.  Two shots were fired at close range at Mr.
Griffin, both taking deadly effect in the face and breast of Mr. Griffin. There
had been ill feeling between the men for several weeks.  Reports say that Mr.
Griffin was returning from a hunting trip and was passing a Negro house on
Johnson's place when he stopped to talk with the Negro named Will Mrgan on the
raod near the house when Johnson came up and fired from behind the corner of the
Negroe's barn. Johnson then took the dead man's pistol from the pockets and
fired it twice. He then told Morgan to swear that he (Morgan) killed Griffin in
self defence.  Mr. Johnson came to Jeffersonville Wednesday morning and was
arrested and placed in jail by Sheriff E.J. Griffin, a brother of the dead man
and was later taken to the ?(can't read) County Jail.  Morgan and his wife were
also arrested and confined in the Twiggs County jail.  A coroner's jury found
Johnson guilty of murder in the first degree.

Mr. Griffin's body was brought to the home of his brother, Sheriff E.J. Griffin
and prepared for burial. The funeral services were held on Wednesday afternoon
at three o'clock at the City Cemetery, the services being conducted by Rev. J.
E. B. Anderson, paster of the Baptist Church. The members of the ? lodge of
Masons had charge of the services.
