Hammock Believed to Have Taken Morphine IN MACON ON WEDNESDAY E.F. Hammock, one of the best known planters of Twiggs county and well known in Macon, died at his home yesterday morning about 6 o'clock near Griswoldville from the effects of what is said to have been morphine. When Mr. Hammock's wife went to this room yesterday morning at 5 o'clock, she found him writhing in pain and on a chair by the side of the bed she found a morphine bottle nearly empty. Mr. Hammock was unconscous and did not regain consciousness before his death about one hour later. The cause of such an act is a mystery in his family and friends. He was reputed as well fixed financially and it was thought that he was at peace with all his friends and relatives. It is suggested by friends that it was probably a temporarily deranged mind that caused him to take the poison. On Wednesdy, Mr. Hammock was in Macon on business and called on a number of his friends here. He appeared in his usual good health and is said to have been in the best of spirits. Mr. Hammock was 63 years of age and had resided in Twiggs county practically all of his life. Besides his widow he is survived by three daughters, two sons, five sisters and one brother, all of whom reside in Twiggs county. The funeral wil be held today at noon and interment will follow at the family burying ground year Griswoldville. Additional Comments: Elijah Franklin Hammock was the son of James Hammock and Anna Jane Cranford. His first wife was Mary Cranford and after her death, he married Mazie Lee Williams.
