(Jim) Carroll williamcarrollj@bellsouth.net May 6, 2010, 6:02 am The Charlotte Observer 7-10-1941 Front Page Joint Funeral Rites For Curtis Helmses Services For Couple Fatally Injured in York Road Wreck Expected to Be Held Friday at 5pm at Mineral Springs Methodist Church Joint funeral services for Mr. and Mrs. Curtis Helms of 2229 Wilkinson Boulevard, who were fatally injured in an automobile crash on York Road Tuesday night, probably will be held Friday afternoon at 5 o'clock at Mineral Springs Methodist Church, with burial in the church cemetery, Rev. N. A. Huffman, pastor, will officiate, assisted by Rev. L. R. Akers Jr. Final details of arrangements, last night were awaiting the arrival of Mrs. Helms brothers from texas. The bodies are at Crouch funeral home here. Mr. Helms died yesterday morning at 10:30 o'clock at a local hospital, some 12 hours after the death of his wife, shortly after the accident Wednesday night. They were 30 and 29 years of age, respectively. The York Road collision also injured three other persons, who are all at Memorial hospital. They are Paul Kissiah of Berryhill Road, a fractured skull, fractured thigh, and deep face cuts; Mrs. Betty Warwick Slack of 3328 Wilkinson Boulevard, a deep cut on the leg; and Manuel Patrick Berger of Pensacola, Fla., contractor, who received chest injuries and cuts. They were reported to be resting confortably last night. The wreck occured when Berger drove his car from a side road into York Road, according to county police report. Berger's car struck the left side of the car driven by Helms. A warrant charging Mr. Berger with manslaughter is being held bu county police. Mr. Helms, a native of Union County, was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. H. A. Helms. He is survived by nine brothers, Bascom and Vail Helms of Mineral Springs, Claude Helms of Tyron, Amon Helms of Charlotte, Eustice Helms of Monroe, Hight Helms of North Wilkesboro, Dewey Helms of Charlotte, Hubert Helms of Rockingham, and Sergeant Kenneth Helms of Fort Jackson, SC; and two sisters, Mrs. B. F. Howey of Mineral Springs and Mrs. John C. Cornell of Monroe. Surviving Mrs. Helms are her father, Claude Butler of Wilkinson Boulevard; two brothers, Capt. Lester Butler and Pvt. Joe Butler of Fort Crockett, Galveston, Texas; one sister, Mrs. Glean Asbell of Macanter, Ga.; and one half brother, Jim Butler of Charlotte. Mrs. Helms brothers are to be pallbearers.
